Sununu Calls Amendment to Protect Religious Freedom "Trivial"

Yesterday State Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley called on NHGOP Chairman John H. Sununu and Republican Legislators to support an amendment to the marriage equality bill which would protect religious freedom.  But today John H. Sununu took to the airwaves and told WGIR AM listeners that the amendment to provide additional religious protections is "trivial."
"The amendment to the marriage equality bill goes a long way to protect religious freedom, but John Sununu has chosen politics over the rights of religious organizations and has even gone so far as to call their rights "trivial." Do Republican leaders really want to be on record opposing protections for churches and clergy?" said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley.

Globe: Women Rule, In NH

From the Op-Ed pages of boston.com, comes an essay by Renee Loth. She opens by asking "What's the matter with New Hampshire?"
First, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted to raise the state's gasoline tax by 15 cents over three years. Then the House approved a bill allowing the use of medical marijuana, by a vote of 234-138. Next, it voted to repeal the state's capital punishment statute. The House wrapped up March with a vote to legalize same-sex marriage, and the Senate followed suit yesterday.

(Follow me below the fold for more. And another debunking of the MA liberal meme)
To bring readers down to Earth again, Loth quotes John H.

That Other Bill

Pretty huge, imo:
CONCORD - Chronically and terminally ill patients would be able to use marijuana to ease their pain under a bill the Senate passed yesterday.

By a 14-10 vote, the Senate approved House Bill 648, which allows patients with approval from both their doctors and the state to have up to two ounces and six plants of marijuana. The law allows a patient to designate one caregiver to grow or possess marijuana for them. They can also obtain the drug from another certified patient.

The bill also sets up a commission to study whether the state should create a system for distributing medicinal marijuana, and the issues that state involvement would raise.

Why I Support Marriage Equality

Jim Splaine asked me to call my representatives about the marriage equality bill.  This led me to think about what I actually support marriage equality, and what I would say to someone who needed to be convinced. So, here is a shot:

1. Americans are supposed to have equal rights under the law.

2. The arguments against marriage equality aren't supported by my personal experience. Let's take "it undermines traditional heterosexual marriage".  Nonsense. How many weddings have we all attended where gays and/or lesbians were in attendance and were happy and supportive of the heterosexual couples getting married?  Gays and lesbians who are fighting for marriage equality would not be fighting so hard for it if they did not support marriage as an institution.

Democrats: "anti-energy, anti-growth, and anti-jobs."

From the NHGOP:

CONCORD - Today, former New Hampshire Governor and Republican State Committee Chairman John H. Sununu released the following statement on the Merrimack Station Power Plant:

“No matter how hard the Democrats try to sound like they have a constructive energy policy, their actions prove they are anti-energy, anti-growth and anti-jobs. The repeated attempts by the House and Senate liberals to force the Merrimack Station Power Plant out of business are perfect examples of the radical and destructive agenda that has been adopted by the New Hampshire Democrat Party. Their actions should serve as a clear indicator for anyone who doubted that the Democrat leadership supports the debilitation of the traditional power sources that supply the majority of New Hampshire residents with cheap and efficient energy.

Bow power plant takes center-stage

Today the New Hampshire State Senate heard testimony on a bill that would require PSNH to study the cost of installing a scrubber at the Merrimack State Power Plant.

PSNH is attempting to build a scrubber that would reduce the mercury levels it emits into the atmosphere, but critics say the scrubber is too expensive and wants PSNH to look into the possibility of using renewable energy sources.

The effort has become so political that well-known activist Gary Hirshberg posted an entry on the website Blue Hampshire and New Hampshire Republican Chairman John H. Sununu released a statement that criticizes the bill.

Here is the Hirshberg column:

Family Motto?

John E. Sununu, 11/26/08:"It hasn't fundamentally changed the fact that New Hampshire is a center-right state"John H. Sununu, 03/12/09:Well, New Hampshire is still, I believe, a right-of-center state.

John H. is very much on message for the rest of that long, interesting interview, but I do confess I chuckled a little when the former governor, legendary for his animus both here and in Washington, decried the "politics of personal destruction" of the NHDP.  That, and his hilarious attempt to portray the GOP as the party of environmentalism.

Hear! Hear!

The Chairman comes out swinging and challenges Governor Do Nuthin' Lynch to be true to his word on the gas tax increase... From former New Hampshire Governor and Republican State Committee Leader John H. Sununu:

“This week the ‘tax and spend’ Democratic leadership in the New Hampshire House passed a 15-cent per gallon tax increase. This action by those Democrats illustrates Governor Lynch’s inability to get the members of his own party to follow his agenda in the Legislature.

During his first bid for re-election in 2006, the Governor made his opposition to a gas tax increase one of centerpiece the issues of his campaign.

Ayotte nominated for another term…what next?

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch is set to nominate Attorney General Kelly Ayotte, for another term.

Ayotte, who many consider a rising Republican star, has held the position since 2004.

The news of her renomination raises an interesting question…what next?

Many Republicans are quietly hoping that Ayotte considers running for governor in 2010, possibly against Lynch, or for congress.

Questions:

-Does her renomination mean that Ayotte is not interested in running for elective office in 2010?
-Did Ayotte talk too New Hampshire Republican Chairman John H. Sununu? If so, what did Sununu say?
-What is Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta thinking about this news?

Why Is John H. Sununu Insulting Republicans?

So, the NHGOP elects a new chairman, and in one of his first interviews with the press, he insults the Republicans who just put themselves forward to run for office. Yup, this is what John H. said to the Keene Sentinel in an interview published today:
"We have not been able to field the best candidates in a number of races - House races, state Senate races and across the board."

Okay, I will agree that their recent gubernatorial candidates have been fairly bad - but he is not referring specifically to them. He is referring to their House and State Senate candidates.
