Sununu Calls Amendment to Protect Religious Freedom "Trivial"

Yesterday State Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley called on NHGOP Chairman John H. Sununu and Republican Legislators to support an amendment to the marriage equality bill which would protect religious freedom.  But today John H. Sununu took to the airwaves and told WGIR AM listeners that the amendment to provide additional religious protections is "trivial."
"The amendment to the marriage equality bill goes a long way to protect religious freedom, but John Sununu has chosen politics over the rights of religious organizations and has even gone so far as to call their rights "trivial." Do Republican leaders really want to be on record opposing protections for churches and clergy?" said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley.

We're Still the One

We're number one! We're number one! On Cillizza's line, anyway:
1. New Hampshire (R): The Granite State has been the epicenter of Republicans' decline in the Northeast over the las few elections. In 2006, both GOP House members were defeated and in 2008 Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D) beat incumbent John Sununu (R). That trend spells trouble for Republicans' chances in the open seat being left behind by Sen. Judd Gregg (R) in 2010. Rep. Paul Hodes is already in the race on the Democratic side and wins strong reviews from national Democrats although Rep. Carol Shea-Porter continues to leave open the possibility of a primary challenge.

NH Dems want Sununu to resign from TARP oversight panel

From the New Hampshire Democratic Party:

Concord- NHDP Chairman Ray Buckley today called on John E. Sununu to step-down from the Congressional Oversight Panel charged with monitoring the government's TARP program.

Sununu, who was appointed to the taxpayer funded position on the TARP panel after losing re-election to the U.S. Senate back in November, just recently joined the board of ConvergEx. 33% of the ConvergeEx stock is owned by the Mellon Bank. The Mellon bank has received over 3 billion in TARP funds. In addition to getting billions in taxpayer dollars, the Mellon Bank was chosen last October to help the Treasury Department administer the TARP program.

Gregg: Sununu would "be a Great Candidate"

Lauren Dorgan (resident expert at eliminating potential senate candidates):
In yesterday's interview, Gregg also clarified his intentions regarding 2010: On Thursday, he'd been quoted as saying either he's not running or that he doesn't intend to run for re-election, two categories that are miles apart in politics, as the latter leaves an opening.

"I'm not running," Gregg said simply yesterday. Gregg said he had actually reached that decision with his wife, Kathy, before the Commerce back-and-forth.

Gregg said that he had not talked to former senator John Sununu, who lost re-election last November, about his intentions. But, he said, he'd "be a great candidate. .

Sununu Dynasty Holding NHGOP Hostage

Lauren Dorgan:
Former senator John Sununu has made no comment on his interest in running once more for Senate, now that his former colleague is creating an opening in 2010.

His father, the Republican party chairman, said there's no rush for his son to make up his mind: "There's no hurry for him to do this. I believe he's been officially out of the Senate about five weeks," he said. His fatherly advice, he said: "Say no fast and yes slowly."

The elder Sununu offered this hint: "I think Sen. Sununu will take a few months . . . and come back sometime around the summer and let people know what he's going to do.

Hodes Beats Bass and Sununu in Senate Match-Up

Well that was fast.  Kleefield at TPM catches a PPP poll (.pdf) just out on the Senate race, with Paul and Carol matched up against a hypothetical BassMaster and the Sprinter:Public Policy Polling (D) has close results in all four trial runs. Democratic Congressman Paul Hodes leads former Congressman Charlie Bass 40%-37%, and edges edges former Senator John Sununu 46%-44%. The Republicans have statistically insignificant leads over Dem Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter: Bass leads 43%-42%, and Sununu is up 46%-45%. The margin of error is ?2.7%.According to the .pdf, PPP polled 1,326 "New Hampshire voters" from 2/6 to 2/8.

Adding: on a personal note, I'd just like to say how both dizzying and oddly familiar it is for me to see these four names tossed around in the context of the same race.  It's like PPP just spat out onto one poll my entire blogging life.

Asymmetric Partisanship in New Hampshire

Sometimes you can be too close to something to really see it. Does a fish ever feel wet?

This morning something blindingly obvious got through my thick head. The next Republican Governor of New Hampshire will be the first Republican New Hampshire Governor in a century or so who actually needs to reach across the aisle and be bipartisan.

Our recent Republican governors have worked with Republican majorities in the House, Senate, and Executive Council. (The Senate sometimes had a Democratic President when the Republicans fractured. But the small Senate must be dealt with person by person anyway, not by party.) What is this "bi-partisanship" you speak of? These governors needed to navigate between the factions of their own party.

Tipping His Hand?

The Globe:State GOP Chairman John Sununu thanked Gregg for 28 years of public service. Sununu said as he became GOP chairman, he knew there was a real possibility that Gregg would not run for re-election next year.Well, I'm glad my suspicion that Gregg would retire was justified.

But more to the point: did Senior, planning a run for Junior, just spill the beans on why he's chair in the first place?
