Just Say Yes

The war on drugs was declared on June 17, 1971. President Richard Nixon declared that drug abuse was
“public enemy number one in the United States.” In 1976, Jimmy Carter advocated the decriminalization of marijuana. Then, in 1984, Nancy Reagan (a dedicated pill-popper herself) gave us the “Just Say No” campaign. Ronald Reagan signed the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986, giving us mandatory minimum penalties for drug offenses, and filling US prisons with drug offenders, some with 20-year sentences.

Republican presidents have given us two unwinnable wars. The war on drugs and the war on terror: both at a cost of approximately a trillion dollars thus far–and counting.

Can NH Afford the Death Penalty?

There was an interesting AP article today, saying that the death penalty makes no sense because of the cost. Now, it makes me wonder why an ueber frugal state like New Hampshire has the death penalty. Newly re-nominated Attorney General Kelly Ayotte is pursuing two death penalty cases at the moment. This at a time when the state is cutting aid to everything and everybody: the disabled, schools, the towns. Even the court system as a whole is woefully underfunded, and has been for some time, not just during this particular crisis.
From the article (bold mine):
Turns out, it is cheaper to imprison killers for life than to execute them, according to a series of recent surveys.

Fair and Reasonable Question

If the Governor has enough faith in AG Kelly Ayotte to nominate her for yet another term, can we the people of New Hampshire expect her to serve that term in full and not use that honor to step down early and run for some other position?

This is a fair and reasonable question to ask, imho.

Ayotte nominated for another term…what next?

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch is set to nominate Attorney General Kelly Ayotte, for another term.

Ayotte, who many consider a rising Republican star, has held the position since 2004.

The news of her renomination raises an interesting question…what next?

Many Republicans are quietly hoping that Ayotte considers running for governor in 2010, possibly against Lynch, or for congress.

Questions:

-Does her renomination mean that Ayotte is not interested in running for elective office in 2010?
-Did Ayotte talk too New Hampshire Republican Chairman John H. Sununu? If so, what did Sununu say?
-What is Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta thinking about this news?

A Democratic State Should Have A Democratic Attorney General II

I found in my inbox this morning a blast e-mail from the irreplaceable Bill Siroty. In it, he mentioned an example of Attorney General Kelly Ayotte's right-wing activism that I had forgotten and I think merits recounting.

In the summer of 2008, the California Supreme Court declared "that California's ban on same-sex marriage violates the 'fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship,'" and made same-sex marriage legal in the nation's largest state. This ruling was met with tooth-gnashing outrage by right-wingers and homophobes throughout our great land.

Throughout the country, politicians of the right searched for ways to make political hay out of the Court's decision.

A Democratic State Should Have A Democratic Attorney General - And Some Possible Candidates

Next month, Governor Lynch will have an opportunity to decide on who would best serve as the State of New Hampshire's lawyer for the next five years. I believe he should listen to clearly expressed will of the people of the state and appoint someone who shares their values - in other words, a Democrat.
It would be very easy for Lynch to simply re-appoint Kelly Ayotte and the easy approach is very often the preferred option for elected officials. This would be a bad idea for a number of reasons, but, I'll limit my criticism to just one case.

2009 rising Republican stars

Although 2008 saw the fall of several Republican heavyweights, it also gave birth to a group of Republicans who will shape the party, and New Hampshire, in 2009.

Below you will find a list of the top ten Republicans to watch for in the upcoming year.

10) Erin Hass: A former State Senate staffer, Hass has developed an impressive Rolodex and will be doing policy work for the Dennehy Group during the upcoming legislative session.

New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte will be featured in series of public service commercials for Comcast, The Concord Monitor reports.

"Attorney General Kelly Ayotte, who may or may not have political ambitions, will star in a series of public service announcements on internet safety over the next year sponsored by Comcast," Lauren Dorgan wrote on Sunday.

Could Addison conviction help Ayotte’s political future?

Republicans often site New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte as a rising star within the party and her recent success in high-profile criminal cases has only raised expectations.

Over the past two months, Ayotte's office has successfully tried two capital murder cases. In October, a jury convicted John Brooks of capital murder in a murder-for-hire case and recently Ayotte personally tried Michael Addison for the murder of Manchester police officer Michael Briggs.

If not Kenney, who? The 62 NH Republicans who would get at least 18 percent against Lynch this year

The University of New Hampshire poll this week showed Republican gubernatorial candidate Joe Kenney receiving a whopping 17 percent of support against Democratic Gov. John Lynch. Given Lynch's approval rating (75 percent) some argue that no one could do better than that. I disagree.
