New Hampshire: Lynch

A Little Courage

Here's the thing.

The civil right of marriage equality isn't about the NH House, or the NH Senate, or Governor Lynch.

Ten years from now almost no one will know or care to know about the actors who made this freedom possible in the Live Free or Die state. And that's a beautiful thing, in my opinion.

So I'm asking as earnestly as I can tonight, for you, Public Servant, to stop for a moment and consider what you have done about marriage equality so far and what you need to do to make it a reality.  I'm asking you to put aside thinking about your next election, or your quid pro quo.

House Bill 436: The Governor's Language -- And Keep Calling!

During the past three days, I haven't been blogging much -- I've been focusing on communicating with House and Senate members about House Bill 436, and what needs to be done during the next three days.  I'm hopeful that by Wednesday we will have approved the additional statutory language that Governor John Lynch wants to make it clear that religious organizations and those connected with them have freedom and independence in our state law.

I have seen considerable dialogue, and numerous questions, on BlueHampshire.com during the past couple of days, and I've noticed some excellent responses by Kathy Sullivan, Dean Barker, and Brian Rater, as well as others.

No matter how many times you try, some things cannot be "fixed"

Our friends at Cornerstone Policy Research write:

Late yesterday, Governor Lynch announced that he will SIGN the same-sex marriage bill if the House and Senate agree to make some changes, despite having told the New Hampshire public time and time again, that he opposes gay marriage.

Governor Lynch has proposed a "cover" religious exemption amendment - much like the same smokescreen amendment the Senate added.  This new language adds protections for religious organizations that are ALREADY covered under the First Amendment - but still does NOTHING to protect independent business owners and persons of faith, who are Justices of the Peace, who will now be forced to provide their services for gay 'marriage' ceremonies or risk being fined up to $50,000 by the Human Rights Commission!

Now, the legislature is going to add yet another amendment to another bill (the third one) in an attempt to "fix" what was a very poorly written bill to begin with.

Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

Globe: Women Rule, In NH

From the Op-Ed pages of boston.com, comes an essay by Renee Loth. She opens by asking "What's the matter with New Hampshire?"
First, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted to raise the state's gasoline tax by 15 cents over three years. Then the House approved a bill allowing the use of medical marijuana, by a vote of 234-138. Next, it voted to repeal the state's capital punishment statute. The House wrapped up March with a vote to legalize same-sex marriage, and the Senate followed suit yesterday.

(Follow me below the fold for more. And another debunking of the MA liberal meme)
To bring readers down to Earth again, Loth quotes John H.

"I'm confused..."

Our friends at Cornerstone Policy Research have released a new web ad urging viewers to contact at Gov. Lynch at 271-2121 and ask him to say "no" to HB 436, the the so-called "genderless marriage" bill...

Don't you just love the "new" New Hampshire, brought to us by the majority Democrats? (And aided and abetted by a few RINOs-- the usual suspects)

Did Jeb Bradley single handedly save New Hampshire unknowingly?

I was curious to read the article in today's The Conway Daily Sun which I was given a preview to last night, the headline read:
"Former governor says Jeb spurred Lynch to try to restore rooms and meals revenue"

The full text article can be found on Page 15 at:

This came as a huge surprise to me to learn what an important role Jeb Bradley played in the budget process considering not one single conversation is quoted as ever having taken place between Jeb and Gov. John Lynch. The notion that Jeb's mere presence would strike such fear into Gov. Lynch is absurd.

Quit Muttering, Losers. We Don't Need GOP Outcry

A Democrat picking a Democrat - "shocking":
It would have been more shocking had Lynch not made his nomination of Republican Ayotte, of Nashua, to another four-year term as attorney general.

Lynch surely didn't need the outcry not just from GOP leaders from Coos County to the Atlantic Ocean, but also the echo of many law-enforcement executives.

Ayotte got the nomination Wednesday, but she learned of it nearly two weeks earlier before Lynch took a half-week vacation.

...This doesn't stop even prominent Democrats from muttering that too many Republicans get perks from this three-term chief executive.

"Sometimes, we think he's more kind to those in the other party than to those of us in his own,'' one declared - privately, of course.

Ayotte nominated for another term…what next?

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch is set to nominate Attorney General Kelly Ayotte, for another term.

Ayotte, who many consider a rising Republican star, has held the position since 2004.

The news of her renomination raises an interesting question…what next?

Many Republicans are quietly hoping that Ayotte considers running for governor in 2010, possibly against Lynch, or for congress.

Questions:

-Does her renomination mean that Ayotte is not interested in running for elective office in 2010?
-Did Ayotte talk too New Hampshire Republican Chairman John H. Sununu? If so, what did Sununu say?
-What is Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta thinking about this news?

A Democratic State Should Have A Democratic Attorney General II

I found in my inbox this morning a blast e-mail from the irreplaceable Bill Siroty. In it, he mentioned an example of Attorney General Kelly Ayotte's right-wing activism that I had forgotten and I think merits recounting.

In the summer of 2008, the California Supreme Court declared "that California's ban on same-sex marriage violates the 'fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship,'" and made same-sex marriage legal in the nation's largest state. This ruling was met with tooth-gnashing outrage by right-wingers and homophobes throughout our great land.

Throughout the country, politicians of the right searched for ways to make political hay out of the Court's decision.
