Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

Taxi cab ride along

Manchester aldermen get to set taxi fares even though the aldermen know nothing about running a taxi business. They don’t have a clue how much a driver needs to make to earn a decent living, what a “fair” rate is, etc. But nonetheless they have empowered themselves to dictate what the fares in Manchester will [...]

Guest Post: We don’t need new taxes, but who will tell Washington?

The road to economic recovery is not paved with new taxes.

by Mike Biundo

New Hampshire’s delegation in Washington needs to share that bit of cold New England logic with their congressional colleagues as they evaluate the Obama administration’s budget proposal.

That proposal includes a giant energy tax increase, although that’s not what the administration’s economic team is calling it. They’d prefer us to think of it as revising Section 199 of the U.S. tax code. That might sound agonizingly dull, but don’t nod off. The revisions they are looking for amount to a $31.5 billion annual tax increase for U.S. energy producers, and that means more economic trouble for the rest of us.

In this issue:

Items 1 and 2: There is an intense debate underway in Concord over the issue of slot machines. The House has rejected two slot machine bills, but some of the ‘no’ votes were gambling supporters who were voting against poorly-drafted legislation. The real fight is in the State Senate. Opponents point to the social costs of expanded gambling. Proponents downplay those costs. But if there is no social cost to expanded gambling, why do the Senate bills limit slot machines to a few locations? If slot machines are a good way for the state to make money, why not have a slot machine casino in Concord and Manchester and Nashua and every other town in the state? The answer, of course, is that most people (and legislators) do understand the social costs of casinos and do not want one in their town.

A Democratic State Should Have A Democratic Attorney General - And Some Possible Candidates

Next month, Governor Lynch will have an opportunity to decide on who would best serve as the State of New Hampshire's lawyer for the next five years. I believe he should listen to clearly expressed will of the people of the state and appoint someone who shares their values - in other words, a Democrat.
It would be very easy for Lynch to simply re-appoint Kelly Ayotte and the easy approach is very often the preferred option for elected officials. This would be a bad idea for a number of reasons, but, I'll limit my criticism to just one case.

Pothole Frank and the Politics of Failure

In the wake of the passage of the Stimulus Bill, I thought it fitting to spend a few minutes considering how I and my fellow residents of Manchester - including Mayor Frank Guinta - would fare. My research didn't give me a very clear idea of what the folks in New Hampshire's largest city can expect from the $790 billion dollar plan, but it did illuminate something else for me: Pothole Frank is a crappy mayor.

Thru what serendipity did I glean this? I began at the website of the US Conference of Mayors (www.usmayors.org). News reports about the fiscal stimulus plan had mentioned that the mayors had put together a wish list of local projects that they hoped could be funded by the stimulus package.

Why Is John H. Sununu Insulting Republicans?

So, the NHGOP elects a new chairman, and in one of his first interviews with the press, he insults the Republicans who just put themselves forward to run for office. Yup, this is what John H. said to the Keene Sentinel in an interview published today:
"We have not been able to field the best candidates in a number of races - House races, state Senate races and across the board."

Okay, I will agree that their recent gubernatorial candidates have been fairly bad - but he is not referring specifically to them. He is referring to their House and State Senate candidates.

Is Ted Gatsas The Worst Person In the World?

In today's Union Leader, there is story about how several members of the Manchester Building and Planning Departments are taking much smaller raises than they are entitled to in order to expedite a merger of the departments.

State Senator Ted Gatsas, who unfortunately also serves as the Alderman from Ward 2 in Manchester, did not thank the employees when asked for comment. This is how the Union Leader describes his reaction:

"I think in these times, people should be very happy they still have a job," he said.

Uh - Senator? Have you no idea how churlish, rude, ungrateful and just plain mean you sound?

Republican Senator Ted Gatsas - doing his Mr. Potter imitation, Senator Ted Gatsas: perhaps the Worst Person In The WOOOORRRRLLLDDDDD!!!!
