BREAKING NEWS: NH Dem Chairman calls the people "thugs"

NH Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley

Using what could be best described as an "ugly" term for someone in the chairman's position in one of the mainstream political parties here in New Hampshire, Democrat leader Ray Buckley shows signs of becoming completely unhinged in the face of the groundswell of anti-socialized health care sentiment.

In what is becoming to be an apparent pattern, Chairman Buckley has once again resorted to calling ordinary people concerned for their state's and country's future names. Recalling that back in April, following a number of Tax-Day Tea Parties, he referred to attendees-- which included people of all ages and stripes-- as an "unhinged mob," we now find out that we are "thugs.

The problems with constructivism in school

Parents are probably hearing how schools are committed to a "student-centered" approach to teaching.  But what does that mean?  In Constructivism it means that your child will be participating in "discovery learning."

In this setting the students work in groups or with other students, and the teacher takes on the role of "facilitator" rather than "instructor."  The goal is to get the students to come up with their own solution to the math problems (although this approach is used in other subjects too); and if the students have problems, they would turn to another student before asking the teacher.

This is exactly what is going on in many of the New Hampshire classrooms.

If you do, you might be interested in this. From the inbox:

PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE HUNTING ADVENTURES
CONCORD – Hunt of a Lifetime, in conjunction with the New Hampshire Chapter of Safari Club International and the New Hampshire Guides Association, is looking for two young people to take part in the New Hampshire Hunting Adventures program.
The program, established by law in 2007, allows the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department to issue two hunting permits to New Hampshire residents 21 or under, with critical, life-threatening or terminal illnesses. The participants may hunt any game species, such as deer, bear, or moose during the regular hunting season.

Catching up on a few things

First, I hope to have the last entry in my Psychedelic Furs tribute done soon. I'm still piecing together memories and data from the live shows. After that, I'll put together the "ultimate" set list for readers to consider before next Monday.

Here are some links that I have been meaning to post for a few weeks now. Enjoy!

The USA Today had this pretty powerful piece the other day about debt: ["Leap in U.S. debt hits taxpayers with 12% more red ink"]. This is probably the most shocking thing I have seen in a very long time. Not only are we on the hook for the federal government's largess, but look at the personal debt.

A Little Courage

Here's the thing.

The civil right of marriage equality isn't about the NH House, or the NH Senate, or Governor Lynch.

Ten years from now almost no one will know or care to know about the actors who made this freedom possible in the Live Free or Die state. And that's a beautiful thing, in my opinion.

So I'm asking as earnestly as I can tonight, for you, Public Servant, to stop for a moment and consider what you have done about marriage equality so far and what you need to do to make it a reality.  I'm asking you to put aside thinking about your next election, or your quid pro quo.

Area school districts stand to lose more than $4.3m in state building aid

Adam Krauss of Foster's Daily Democrat explores how much seacoast school districts stand to lose should the Senate adopt the New Hampshire budget, and the cut in Building Aid, as approved by the House:
Twelve local school districts stand to lose more than $4.3 million combined if the state Senate doesn't restore school building aid after the House passed on it, a new study shows.

The impact has superintendents upset at the possibility, to the point one raised the potential for a lawsuit.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen needs to take the lead in stopping Waxman-Markey 'Cap and Trade' Bill!

Guest Post by former State Senator George Lovejoy...

New Hampshire Senators sent to Washington have long been respected for their traditional common sense.  It is a long cherished value of the Granite State and on many issues New Hampshire Senators have taken the lead in getting colleagues from both parties to apply this ideal on very critical issues of importance to most Americans.

Such an issue is Congressional motivation to pass Waxman-Markey Climate Change ‘Cap and Trade’ Bill, a proposal now being discussed by the US House, as well as most Americans.  The need for Senator Jeanne Shaheen to step up to take the lead in defeating this consumer costly strategy could not be greater!  This proposal sounds good in the beltway but fails the people miserably as it will increase energy costs to consumers, cost jobs, while doling out free permits to selected industries (see last week’s Wall Street Journal article “Waxman-Markey Bill: It’s Giveaway Time for Emissions Permits”).

The Curse of Newspapers, Conveniently Summarized

The news business.  I learned about it in a newspaper that wasn't on newspaper.
It's an old Roman curse to wish you "to live in interesting times," and today's times are certainly "interesting" - and that's a big understatement - for newspapers.

But recall a relatively few years ago when television appeared, many obituaries for the movie industry were written. But it didn't happen. We still have a movie industry. It is much different than it was at the dawn of the television era, but it has adapted and survived.

So I suspect it will be with the news business. No one can predict what it will look like when the Internet revolution has run its course, but unless you think that society as a whole is willing to give up objective news in favor of the opinion and invective that seems to dominate the Internet at the moment, the news will survive in one form or another.

House Bill 436: The Governor's Language -- And Keep Calling!

During the past three days, I haven't been blogging much -- I've been focusing on communicating with House and Senate members about House Bill 436, and what needs to be done during the next three days.  I'm hopeful that by Wednesday we will have approved the additional statutory language that Governor John Lynch wants to make it clear that religious organizations and those connected with them have freedom and independence in our state law.

I have seen considerable dialogue, and numerous questions, on BlueHampshire.com during the past couple of days, and I've noticed some excellent responses by Kathy Sullivan, Dean Barker, and Brian Rater, as well as others.

Sununu Calls Amendment to Protect Religious Freedom "Trivial"

Yesterday State Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley called on NHGOP Chairman John H. Sununu and Republican Legislators to support an amendment to the marriage equality bill which would protect religious freedom.  But today John H. Sununu took to the airwaves and told WGIR AM listeners that the amendment to provide additional religious protections is "trivial."
"The amendment to the marriage equality bill goes a long way to protect religious freedom, but John Sununu has chosen politics over the rights of religious organizations and has even gone so far as to call their rights "trivial." Do Republican leaders really want to be on record opposing protections for churches and clergy?" said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley.
