Sununu Calls Amendment to Protect Religious Freedom "Trivial"

Yesterday State Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley called on NHGOP Chairman John H. Sununu and Republican Legislators to support an amendment to the marriage equality bill which would protect religious freedom.  But today John H. Sununu took to the airwaves and told WGIR AM listeners that the amendment to provide additional religious protections is "trivial."
"The amendment to the marriage equality bill goes a long way to protect religious freedom, but John Sununu has chosen politics over the rights of religious organizations and has even gone so far as to call their rights "trivial." Do Republican leaders really want to be on record opposing protections for churches and clergy?" said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley.

Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

Sununu Senior and Phony Man-Made Climate Change

Sununu Senior uncovers the vast "anti-growth" conspiracy of the phony climate change crisis, and how media are easily duped:
We need to recognize that for at least most of the next decade the real battle will be to win over public opinion and influence the policy makers. Unfortunately, standing between us and the public most of the time is the media. And the press seems to have bought the alarmist line, hook and sinker. They thrive on reinforcing the alarms.

I am often asked about the press. The question is usually something like "is the press biased or ignorant?" My answer is: Yes they are.

Libs in the GOP a Square Peg in Round Hole?

One of the least reported stories, imo, in recent New Hampshire politics is an increasing effort among libertarians to feel at home in the NHGOP, both those upper case Libs who are gaining greater access to power under cover of one of the two dominant parties, and lower case libs already in the GOP who feel bereft at where the party has gone.

I've been contemplating a series of posts about this, but let's start with one that jumped in front my Google Alerts this morning - one gay libertarian Republican's view of Jennifer Horn's visit to the Cheshire GOP, since it illustrates beautifully the crux of the dilemma:

At the gathering, numerous snide remarks were made about the 'liberal media,' lawyers, teachers, and liberals in general.

Rebellion Without a Cause

Republicans are beating up on President Obama for his 'big government spending' in a time of crisis, when only the federal government can pump oxygen back into the economy.  They're standing lockstep against all spending, including keeping the lights on in Washington.

But since the state of New Hampshire can't print money and can't run massive deficits, and since raising taxes is NEVER NEVER NEVER okay, what are Republicans criticizing Governor Lynch about these days?  This is the centerpiece of the NHGOP homepage right now:

ARGH! You tax and spend Democrats with your tax and spend Democrat spending cuts! NEW HAMPSHIRE DESERVES BETTER!

Hilarious as this blatant ideological 180 is, it demonstrates an important point: the only principle the Republican Party stands on in 2009 is that Democrats are bad.  And that's no way to put Country First.

Jeb Bradley and the NHGOP will be using Twitter to win this election, so let's have a strong showing on the other latest social networking phenomenon that suddenly even your grandmother knows about.

Things I Learned

Things I learned from the write-up on Jennifer Horn and her talk to Franklin Republicans.

* According to the Mayor of Franklin, if you love your country, your family, and God, then obviously you couldn't be anything else than a Republican. Which, logic would dictate, means that we all here hate our country, our families, and God.  Nice.

* According to Jennifer Horn, the Republican party was the driving force behind civil rights.

* If the NHGOP get on Twitter, they will win more elections.

* Jennifer Horn joins Judd Gregg in defying GOP Maximum Leader Limbaugh's call for Obama to fail.

I think the pink/salmon one looks the best, personally. And for only $18.99 (plus shipping and handling, of course) it can be yours today!

I found it while browsing my favorite new "501(c)3 non-profit public interest organization where your donations are tax deductible," Americans for Accountability, chaired by... wait for it... former US Senator from New Hampshire, Bob Smith!

As Bob puts it in his "blog":

I was proud to serve for twelve years the United States Senate defending conservative principles. Today, I stand with many Americans with burning questions about the new President. Just how was he elected? Who are the people he's asked to surround him? And, in some cases: what the heck is going on?
Just how was Obama elected anyway?  I hope Senator Shelby and Alan Keyes will join this new non-profit group and demand answers to these burning questions.

Sununu Dynasty Holding NHGOP Hostage, Part III

The Big D scoops everyone else for the latest on the candidate roundup:
Jennifer Horn, a Republican and former radio talk-show host who challenged Hodes in 2008, has said she is strongly considering a bid for the Senate in 2010. Grant Bosse, whom Horn defeated to secure the Republican nomination last year, is also reported to be considering a bid.

Bass, Horn and Bosse are also reportedly considering campaigns for Hodes's House seat.

"You're in a spot right now where a lot of people are thinking of running, but no one is sure what they're running for yet," Ryan Williams, the communication director for the New Hampshire Republican Party, said.

Sununu Dynasty Holding NHGOP Hostage

Lauren Dorgan:
Former senator John Sununu has made no comment on his interest in running once more for Senate, now that his former colleague is creating an opening in 2010.

His father, the Republican party chairman, said there's no rush for his son to make up his mind: "There's no hurry for him to do this. I believe he's been officially out of the Senate about five weeks," he said. His fatherly advice, he said: "Say no fast and yes slowly."

The elder Sununu offered this hint: "I think Sen. Sununu will take a few months . . . and come back sometime around the summer and let people know what he's going to do.
