9 Comments: Merit Pay for Teachers

I caught part of Laura Knoy's show on NHPR today, discussing merit pay in the public schools. Obama has endorsed the idea.

There have been a few public school teachers in my family. They all worked here in New Hampshire; Obama's experience in Chicago was undoubtedly different.

I come to a different conclusion than the President: I think the idea is foolish, ignorant, and insulting.

  1. I've spent most of my career in the private sector. In that time I have never had my annual raise or opportunity for promotion based on the sort of crisp clear metrics that 'merit pay' proponents claim we can have for teachers.

Next month, Governor Lynch will have an opportunity to decide on who would best serve as the State of New Hampshire's lawyer for the next five years. I believe he should listen to clearly expressed will of the people of the state and appoint someone who shares their values - in other words, a Democrat.
It would be very easy for Lynch to simply re-appoint Kelly Ayotte and the easy approach is very often the preferred option for elected officials. This would be a bad idea for a number of reasons, but, I'll limit my criticism to just one case.

Perhaps you learned these words by rote in grade school too.

In my class we spoke that last line:
"of the people, by the people, for the people.
