Healthcare Enemy No. 1

100 Days

By Christopher Hayes

This article appeared in the March 30, 2009 edition of The Nation.

Rush Limbaugh offers Democrats an irresistible target as the de facto leader of the Republican Party, but for my money, Rick Scott is the man who best embodies the spirit of the current conservative opposition. The name may not exactly be a household word, or it may ring a faint bell, but Politico recently reported that the millionaire Republican would be heading up Conservatives for Patients' Rights (CPR), a new group that plans to spend around $20 million to kill President Obama's efforts at healthcare reform.

"My Stalker just Grunted on my Twitter"

"Twitter" is everywhere. I can't seem to escape it. Every morning, it's everyone in my Politico and NBC newsletters. David Gregory, Rick Sanchez, half of Congress, they all twittweet! And maybe I'm sixty years too young, BUT I CAN'T STAND IT!!! ENOUGH!!! The words sound silly - "twitter" and "tweet" - and the concept is borderline ludacris: 140 word blips for those whose attention span can't even hold a Facebook status update. Now, I could deal with that, except for what the Twits are being used for - Congressmen at the State of the Union were twittering every last inane thought that crossed their mind, no matter how irrelevant, personal, or silly it might be, and the journalists who cover them are even worse.

Politico is a Journalism Black Hole

While TPM, dKos, and more recently others have been hitting back, I've mostly kept my mouth shut on Politico's new and ridiculous gotcha style they've put up since inauguration.  But this just takes the cake:
The Obama Cabinet is a CEO black hole
By EAMON JAVERS

In President Barack Obama's Cabinet, there is a Nobel Prize winner, a former mayor, and a veteran CIA agent. Surrounding him in the White House West Wing are a former four-star general, one of the nation's most eminent economists, and a handful of this generation's most talented political operatives. This constellation of talent, however, has something of a black hole.

Stoopidico

Can you count the stoopid in this Politico piece? Here's my count:

1. Unnamed "Democrats" defining the narrative:

Democrats said Sunday that they were willing to accept Lynch's appointment of a Republican so long as the new senator is either a caretaker who would step aside in 2010, leaving an open seat, or someone who lacks statewide appeal.

2. Andy Smith's customary GOP handicapping early in the cycle:

"If Gregg stays in the Senate and runs in 2010, he likely wins," said Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire's Survey Center.

3. A state that voted by almost 10 points for Obama, and with decisive victories for Democrats Shaheen, Hodes, Shea-Porter and even Lynch would looove another Republican, and minority-member senator in the Senate:

Lynch, a moderate with approval ratings north of 70 percent, could bolster his image of staying above partisan politics by picking a Republican or independent for the seat.

"Strong Possibility" Obama Taps Gregg for Commerce

Sam Stein, HuffPo (h/t Hope Not Fear):There is a strong possibility that Barack Obama will ask Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) to serve as his Secretary of Commerce, Democratic Senate aides tell the Huffington Post.

The move would fill a vacancy that has lingered since Gov. Bill Richardson withdrew his nomination. And provided that Al Franken emerges victorious in the Minnesota recount, it would give Democrats in the Senate a 60th caucusing member, as New Hampshire's Democratic governor John Lynch would appoint Gregg's replacement.Well, this would certainly explain the Gregg's string of I Heart Obama articles.

But...Already, a GOP operative writes in to say: "No way that Gregg takes it."Why? Well, 60 seats; that's why.

More: Make that two sources.  Roll Call saying much the same.

Obama appeals for help from N.H. homeowners

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) presidential campaign is requesting that New Hampshire families send in pictures of their homes and describing how many houses they own in an attempt to take advantage of a misstep by Obama's opponent.

The effort comes in response to Wednesday's statement by U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) that he does not know how many houses he owns.

Obama planning to compete in Granite State

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's deputy campaign manager says their campaign will have to "play hard" to win New Hampshire in November.

"We're going to have to play hard in New Hampshire - we completely recognize that," Steve Hildebrand told Politico's Ben Smith.

Hildebrand said Obama will compete in states carried by President Bush in 2004 and will also focus on New Hampshire.
