All Hands In Lebanon: Vote For ANDY WHITE In Important Special Election This Tuesday!

A VERY important election is being held this Tuesday, June 2nd -- that's like "tomorrow" -- in Lebanon.  It's for a seat in the New Hampshire State Legislature.

We lost House Bill 73 by one vote two weeks ago.  This could be THE vote that will get it passed on Wednesday if our Democratic candidate wins and he can be sworn in on time!

Besides, he's a mighty good candidate.

His name is Andy White, and he's the Democratic candidate running against Republican Randy Wagoner.

Andy White has said he would have voted for House Bill 436, which has already passed the House and Senate and will be sent to Governor John Lynch shortly.

Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

Healthcare Enemy No. 1

100 Days

By Christopher Hayes

This article appeared in the March 30, 2009 edition of The Nation.

Rush Limbaugh offers Democrats an irresistible target as the de facto leader of the Republican Party, but for my money, Rick Scott is the man who best embodies the spirit of the current conservative opposition. The name may not exactly be a household word, or it may ring a faint bell, but Politico recently reported that the millionaire Republican would be heading up Conservatives for Patients' Rights (CPR), a new group that plans to spend around $20 million to kill President Obama's efforts at healthcare reform.

'Grok official motto: We thank'm when they're right and spank'm when they're wrong.

This is the thank'm part (emphasis mine):

I appreciate the chairman saying that, in the second five years of this budget, the debt levels are unsustainable, because they are.

And the cost of this budget is unsustainable. And the tax burden is unsustainable. The chairman didn't say that. I added the second two categories. ...

The problem is that that effort to try to stabilize the economy has been used as a straw dog for the purposes of expanding the size of government in the out years exponentially, moving it to the left in a way that has never been projected or seen before, should it be successful.

Rebellion Without a Cause

Republicans are beating up on President Obama for his 'big government spending' in a time of crisis, when only the federal government can pump oxygen back into the economy.  They're standing lockstep against all spending, including keeping the lights on in Washington.

But since the state of New Hampshire can't print money and can't run massive deficits, and since raising taxes is NEVER NEVER NEVER okay, what are Republicans criticizing Governor Lynch about these days?  This is the centerpiece of the NHGOP homepage right now:

ARGH! You tax and spend Democrats with your tax and spend Democrat spending cuts! NEW HAMPSHIRE DESERVES BETTER!

Hilarious as this blatant ideological 180 is, it demonstrates an important point: the only principle the Republican Party stands on in 2009 is that Democrats are bad.  And that's no way to put Country First.

Uh,Oh. Who's Going to Tell the Supreme Leader?

A cherry on top of what can be charitably called the worst month of Judd Gregg's senate career:New Hampshire Republican Judd Gregg , however, disputed the notion that GOP lawmakers want Obama's fiscal policy to fail. He suggested Reid's comments were prompted by a flap within the Republican Party over statements made by conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

"Most of us want to see the president succeed because this country's in such dire straits, that unless this administration's successful, we're not going to get out of it," said Gregg, who was Obama's first pick to head the Commerce Department but withdrew from consideration.

But who will tell him?

(Of course, Gregg's self-serving quote is preposterous, as is shown by his forceful opposition so far to the Administration's economic policy. But the line in the sand to RNC Virtual Chair Limbaugh remains.)

Mr. President? About Social Security...

This isn't accurate, right?

After all the talk about "bi-partisanship" in  general and Judd Gregg in particular, you're not going to let him anywhere near a Social Security "reform" group, are you?

Because that is the LAST place to look for a bipartisan stamp. The Republican Party wants to eliminate Social Security and turn all that FICA money over to the stockbrokers. That's true even of the so-called moderates.

If you decide that cuts in benefits or extensions of the retirement age needed, the absolute worst thing you can do is get a Republican blessing of that conclusion. It would be like getting George Steinbrenner to say how great a Red Sox trade is.

Survey Says!

Mr. Smith has released another piece of his survey; this one is President Obama's ratings.  His favorable rating has gone from 53% in September to 71% (a/k/a Lynch Territory), while his approval rating is 66%, with 21% disapproving and 14% disapproving.

I have one disagreement with Mr. Smith's analysis. He said,

Obama continues to receive the approval of political independents and the vast majority of Democrats. Currently, 65% of

political independents approve of his job performance, and 90% of Democrats approve. However, a plurality of Republicans

disapprove of Obama's performance as President - 44% disapprove while 39% approve - an indication that old partisan

divides are reviving.

I don't think that is a partidan divide; I think that shows the Republican Party is divided; 39%  of the Republicans approves of the President's performance, while just 5% more disapprove?  That is what I would call a divide.

Gregg: Sununu would "be a Great Candidate"

Lauren Dorgan (resident expert at eliminating potential senate candidates):
In yesterday's interview, Gregg also clarified his intentions regarding 2010: On Thursday, he'd been quoted as saying either he's not running or that he doesn't intend to run for re-election, two categories that are miles apart in politics, as the latter leaves an opening.

"I'm not running," Gregg said simply yesterday. Gregg said he had actually reached that decision with his wife, Kathy, before the Commerce back-and-forth.

Gregg said that he had not talked to former senator John Sununu, who lost re-election last November, about his intentions. But, he said, he'd "be a great candidate. .

Union Leader Disowns Judd Gregg (via The Globe)

Still think Judas Gregg is the GOP's newest hero?

Kinda hard to do when you've lost Joe McQuaid, the only man on earth who can spin gold out of elephant dung better than Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly:

McQuaid says it's healthy for the state Republican Party to have an open seat, an opportunity for regeneration.

McQuaid said he did not think the Union Leader would have supported Gregg for a fourth term.

Let's leave aside for a minute how full of baloney that statement is.  The Union Leader is, after all, famous for showing support for Charlie Bass no less than three ostentatious times prior to the election, and then telling him never to run again practically the morning after the race.
