Health Care for All: You Can Get It if You Really Want It...

But like the song says, you must try.

I cop to the fact that I'm passionate about grassroots politics. I'm excited by the idea that when people of good will come together and work hard and smart, we can change the course of history. I know this sounds sick, but I often fantasize about how much progress we could make in America if the Democratic party embraced an inclusive, activist culture, and invested in the infrastructure to support it.

We got a taste of what that would look and feel like during the '08 election, when the NH coordinated campaign mobilized thousands of in-state volunteers to deliver strong Democratic victories up and down the ticket.

Group says EFCA would benefit Granite State

A New Hampshire health care group says that the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) would help the state’s economy and workers.

“The bill could provide a major boost to the economy by helping workers share in the prosperity that they help create,” the group NH for Healthcare wrote in a press release. “A report released last month from the Center for American Progress showed that if even 5% more of New Hampshire’s workers joined unions, $82 million would be pumped into the state’s economy each year.”

According to the group, The Employee Free Choice Act “restores the option of ‘majority sign-up,’ in addition to elections, to ensure that workers, not employers decide how to form a union.

Local SEIU endorses Backus

State Senate candidate Bob Backus has been endorsed by SEIU Local 1984 State Employees Association.

Backus is running against state Sen. Ted Gatsas (R-Manchester) in state senate district 16. In 2006 the SEIU did not endorse either candidate.

SEIU airs ad against Sununu

A prominent national labor union is sponsoring a 30-second ad against U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley).

The ad, titled "Higher Cost," is being paid by the Service Employees International Union and argues that Sununu voted against lower drug prices after he accepted money from drug companies.

National health care effort starts N.H. campaign

Health Care for America Now, a national effort led by groups such as the SEIU, AFSCME, MoveOn.org and Planned Parenthood Federation of America, announced at a press conference that they are forming a New Hampshire campaign, New Hampshire for Health Care, aimed at reaching voters throughout the state.

Exclusive: Unions file lawsuit against state retirement system

Six public employee unions, led by the influential Professional Fire Fighters of New Hampshire, formally asked the Merrimack County Superior Court to require the state's retirement board to pay for a medical subsidy it has not paid for months.
