Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

Senator Gregg stands strong with his banker friends against the middle class

The US Senate killed an amendment to the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act today that would have helped thousands of NH residents keep their homes by letting them seek court relief from crushing mortgage burdens. The amendment gave bankruptcy judges the power to reduce the size of a mortgage to help people who are in danger of being foreclosed on.  It was an important part of the effort to restore our housing market and indirectly stabilize the economy.

The amendment was fiercely opposed by the banking industry, who said it was nothing more than a bailout to the poor and middle class.

Evan Bayh's Dopey Little Club Not the Real Danger

Just to be clear since the chatter is growing: I couldn't care less that Jeanne Shaheen is a member of Evan Bayh's dopey little club.

Jeanne Shaheen is a moderate Democrat.  There is nothing at all surprising about this, even for someone like me who didn't get invested in New Hampshire politics until after her gubernatorial career.  What is surprising - and wonderful - is how often I have been happy with her votes in the short time she has been in the senate.

That Shaheen meets with moderate senators is not cause for alarm. It's not cause for anything.

What is cause for alarm is

Guest Post: We don’t need new taxes, but who will tell Washington?

The road to economic recovery is not paved with new taxes.

by Mike Biundo

New Hampshire’s delegation in Washington needs to share that bit of cold New England logic with their congressional colleagues as they evaluate the Obama administration’s budget proposal.

That proposal includes a giant energy tax increase, although that’s not what the administration’s economic team is calling it. They’d prefer us to think of it as revising Section 199 of the U.S. tax code. That might sound agonizingly dull, but don’t nod off. The revisions they are looking for amount to a $31.5 billion annual tax increase for U.S. energy producers, and that means more economic trouble for the rest of us.

Elections, Hope, Change

Elections result in change.

Yesterday that change meant not having to suffer through any more of Bush and Sununu's barriers to science.

One of New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen's granddaughters was at the White House when President Barack Obama formally signed an executive order opening the door for more stem cell research.

Shaheen says she has long favored embryonic stem cell research, but the issue became personal when granddaughter Elle was diagnosed with diabetes.

Obama on Monday reversed a ban on federal funding for the research.

Carol Shea-Porter:
"Today, President Obama has given hope to the millions of Americans suffering from Type 1 Diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and spinal cord injuries.

The Conscience of a Liberal in (Northern) CD-1

I tell my friends and colleagues that my congressional district, CD-1, is a remarkable example of rising Democratic tides. More so than most places in New Hampshire, my home area, the Lakes Region, is an enclave for Republicans. Without even looking at empirical data, my thoughts about the reasoning for this trend are numerous. Yet, most important, in my opinion, are the lack of higher education and professional opportunities in the area. Without any UNH or Dartmouth to anchor a progressive atmosphere, the region instead is generally blue collar and has historically been reliably Republican.

When I graduated from high school in 2003, as a certified Deaniac who portrayed Shaheen in a mock debate during the 2002 election, everything except the water was red in my area.

Scary Chart

This chart is getting a lot of play in the blogosphere:

Look at the X axis in particular. Look how many years it has taken to recover from a gap the height of the current one - just the gap from where the green line drops below the others.

The more I study this chart, the more worried I get.

Senator Shaheen, Kathy suggested that you've been working to get the 60 votes to pass something.  Thank you! Because we need a big stimulus bill, bigger than this, and we need it yesterday.

Crabgate, Part Deux

The Washington Post today is shedding more light on the services provided by Staffer F (Kevin Koonce), the legislative director for Judd Gregg, to Todd Boulanger and Jack Abramoff:
Boulanger asked Staffer F in September 2002 for help preserving a $3.5 million earmark for a client.

In January 2003, Boulanger turned to Staffer F to fight a threat to Abramoff's tribal clients, who would donate $12,000 to Gregg's campaigns; then- Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) was pushing to allow Alaska Native firms to open gambling casinos anywhere in the United States. Staffer F said that his office had "flagged" the proposal.

The news side ot today's Post must be making David Broder sad; in his column today, he wrote:

For now, recruiting Gregg for Commerce is scant consolation for the loss of Daschle.

Enter Katrina

Stories tumbling like dominoes today: With U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes, D-N.H., ready to announce his candidacy for Judd Gregg's U.S. Senate seat within a week, veteran Democratic activist Katrina Swett will become a candidate for his 2nd District U.S. House seat, Democratic sources say.(Just as an aside, I'd like to stress how counter-productive it is that DiStaso continues to be the source for Democratic leaks. Lauren Dorgan and Kevin Landrigan have phone numbers too, Democrats, and they don't work for right-wing newspapers.)

For those of you newish to BH, and going Katrina Who?, here's our tag for her, which documents her run for senate in '07.  Since I haven't heard a peep from her since she bowed out to let Shaheen in, aside from getting the best holiday card in the history of holiday cards, it's definitely been a while.

Dueling Press Releases Defining the Moment

The releases pasted below the fold came almost back-to-back in my in-box.  A better temperature reading of this moment couldn't be taken, I don't think.

The first one is from NHDP Chair Ray Buckley, and the second from Zandra Rice Hawkins at Granite State Progress.
Ray's:

STATEMENT FROM CHAIRMAN BUCKLEY ON POSSIBLE GREGG NOMINATION

(CONCORD) Below is a statement from New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Raymond Buckley:

"President Obama was elected to lead and deliver results for the American people, and to go beyond partisan politics to find real solutions to our nation's economic problems. If he determines that Senator Gregg is essential to his effort to rebuild America's economy, then we should trust his judgment and support his decision.
