Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

NRCC leans on Shea-Porter over EFCA

The NRCC has released a statement criticizing U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) because she is a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act.

Here is the NRCC statement:

Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) signed her name on the dotted line yesterday by co-sponsoring the so-called Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) – better known as “card-check.” In doing so, the New Hampshire Democrat signaled her support to strip workers of the right to a secret union ballot, a practice that leads to corruption and worker intimidation, not to mention its potential to kill jobs generated by small businesses. Shea-Porter's support of card-check is further proof that she has put the special interests of Big Labor that funded her campaign ahead of the needs of struggling working class families she regrettably misrepresents in Congress.

NRCC goes after Shea-Porter on housing vote

From the NRCC:

Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) voted last night against protecting millions of Americans who played by the rules, including thousands of her constituents. The motion that she voted against would have prohibited those who lied on mortgage applications from receiving taxpayer assistance. Instead, Shea-Porter has voted along with her party bosses in Washington to reward dishonest borrowers, unscrupulous lenders, and speculators (House Roll Call 103).

Specifically, Shea-Porter voted against a motion that would prohibit taxpayer funds from being used:

to assist anyone who lied about their income or assets on their mortgage application;
to assist any lender that failed to follow proper underwriting standards;
as incentives to lenders to rework loans for irresponsible borrowers;
unless the President submits a plan that provides equitable treatment of all mortgage holders.

NRSC Trying to Monkey with Shea-Porter and NH-Senate

The NRSC released a web ad today trashing our Carol.

I'm not going to link to it because that's the whole point.  Web ads have no effect on anyone other than media elites who craft political narrative and dirty hippies like us who try to push that narrative here or there.

It's pretty clear the point of the ad is to get people talking up a run by Carol for Senate, and therefore a divisive primary for us and a weaker general election prospect.  Or what the Hill said:

Though the effectiveness of Web videos is up for debate, the early shots at Shea-Porter could be seen as an effort by the NRSC to get her into the race.

NOW, Obama wants to reign in spending - will he veto 9,000 earmarks?

After the last couple of days of listening to Obama, you'd get that impression with that Fiscal Responsibility Summit on Monday and last night's speech.  But, as with all things Obama, there is seemingly always an expiration date.  This one, not so much (dodge: "well, this is left over business from Bush!).

$410 Billion Omnibus spending.  8.5% over last year (well over the rate of inflation).  9,000 or so earmarks (40% of them Republican - YUCK!).

From a tweet from Styx1972, got a link to here which led to TaxPayers for Common Sense which has ALL of the earmarks listed by Department.  Well, I decided to take a look to see what my Congress Critters decided to earmark (it took a while the formats between the House & Senate versions were different; I make no claim that I have the absolute full list - after all, there's a LOT of hidden stuff in those bills).

Smith Sizes Up Hodes and Shea-Porter

It's in Hotline, because apparently I'm the last person in the world who gets releases from UNH (though I don't blame Mr. Smith for not putting me in his mailing list, given the frequent criticisms given here to his non-weighing, low sampling, etc...):
Hodes gets higher overall reviews from his constituents: 46% of adults in the Second CD view him favorably, 13% have an unfavorable opinion of him, and 41% are neutral or don't know enough to say. For Shea-Porter, 38% of adults in the First CD have a favorable opinion of her, 26% have an unfavorable opinion of her, and 37% are neutral or don't know enough to form an opinion of her.

Two Bases, One Blog

I like Landrigan a lot, but this is just silly, and makes me wonder about the other nuggets of inside baseball in the piece:
Why would Hodes leak a statement about his Senate plans to the liberal Blue Hampshire blog? To curry favor with the more left-leaning base of the party that's always been more enamored with Shea-Porter.
From our about page:
Blue Hampshire was founded by bloggers Dean Barker, Michael Caulfield, and Laura Clawson,  formerly of The Yankee Doodler, NH-02 Progressive, and Blue Granite. While chiefly following the Paul Hodes and Charles Bass congressional race, they occasionally became part of the story itself, most notably when a top aide to Bass posed as a liberal blogger on their sites to dampen support and contributions for Hodes.

Senator Bill Gardner?

There's been a lot of speculation about who Governor Lynch might pick to fill Judd Gregg's seat, in the event that Gregg is picked to become Obama's Commerce Secretary. A name I haven't heard but that I think deserves more attention is Secretary of State Bill Gardner. He would fit a lot of very important criteria for the role.

First, he's popular around the state and not viewed as overly partisan. He's been supported by Democrats and Republicans alike to hold his current position, and as foremost defender of the New Hampshire Primary, he's got strong credibility as someone who will do what's right for New Hampshire.
