Shaheen Statement on Sotomayor

In part:
This week we have the opportunity to make history by confirming the first Hispanic and only the third woman to the United States Supreme Court.  I come to the floor today to speak in support of Sonia Sotomayor's nomination, however, not because of the historic nature of that nomination, but because she is more than qualified to sit on the Supreme Court and I am perplexed by why the vote on her nomination will not be unanimous.
Full statement below the fold.

As a side note, I am going to be especially interested to compare the number of Dems who voted no on Souter compared to the total of today's GOPers who vote no on Sotomayor.

Health Care for All: You Can Get It if You Really Want It...

But like the song says, you must try.

I cop to the fact that I'm passionate about grassroots politics. I'm excited by the idea that when people of good will come together and work hard and smart, we can change the course of history. I know this sounds sick, but I often fantasize about how much progress we could make in America if the Democratic party embraced an inclusive, activist culture, and invested in the infrastructure to support it.

We got a taste of what that would look and feel like during the '08 election, when the NH coordinated campaign mobilized thousands of in-state volunteers to deliver strong Democratic victories up and down the ticket.

Catching up on a few things

First, I hope to have the last entry in my Psychedelic Furs tribute done soon. I'm still piecing together memories and data from the live shows. After that, I'll put together the "ultimate" set list for readers to consider before next Monday.

Here are some links that I have been meaning to post for a few weeks now. Enjoy!

The USA Today had this pretty powerful piece the other day about debt: ["Leap in U.S. debt hits taxpayers with 12% more red ink"]. This is probably the most shocking thing I have seen in a very long time. Not only are we on the hook for the federal government's largess, but look at the personal debt.

Prosecutors to Question Rove on U.S. Attorney Firings

By Carrie Johnson

Former top White House official Karl Rove will be interviewed tomorrow as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into the firing of U.S. attorneys during the Bush administration, according to two sources familiar with the appointment.

Rove has remained in the news as a commentator and political analyst since departing the White House. In an essay in today's Wall Street Journal, he criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), arguing that she may have misled the public about her knowledge of detainee interrogation tactics that critics assert are torture.

Back in China again!

I am staying at a hotel in Beijing about 3 blocks from Tiananmen Square where the infamous protest event will celebrate its 20th anniversary in two weeks. Tiananmen Square would be equivalent to our nation’s capital. This is where the Chinese government officials meet. The Square also encompasses Chairman Mao’s Crypt and the Forbidden City where the Emperor once lived. China hasn’t had an emperor in over 50 years and still has a Chairman as its leader. Life here in the major Cities of China is not much different than in the U.S. (aside from the fact that they eat with chop sticks).

And Progressives complain about profit in healthcare?

Isn't it time to get Government OUT of the healthcare field altogether??  Hey, with examples like this, Obama's question:

The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works -- whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified."

-President Barack Obama, 1/20/09

is answered with yet another "No", it's not working....Government isn't exactly setting the world on fire for being accurate or "paying attention to detail" here either:

Government-Run Health Insurance Program Made Almost $19 Billion in Improper Payments in 2008

(CNSNews.com) - Medicaid, the government-run health insurance program for low income people that is administered by state governments and funded by federal taxpayers, made almost $19 billion in improper payments in 2008, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office last week.

U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter's latest fundraising appeal:

Friend,

The 2010 campaign should not be starting already, but it is. The Washington Republicans have said NO to President Obama, NO to the American agenda and NO to my re-election in 2010.

NO WAY, NO HOW!

The Party of “NO” cannot turn our country back. I need you to help right now to show them that you support this new American agenda and that you support me.

NO WAY, NO HOW do we want to see the party of “NO” back.

Third Party Billing For Service-Connected Injuries

This story has peaked my interest and I am relatively in the dark. There has been much flailing of arms and gnashing of teeth. My jury is out, but I tend to err with the VSOs. Sorry, Mr.President.

Let's take a walk, shall we?
To set this up, I've provided a Rachel Maddow segment that covers the matter:

(h/t IAVA)

Eleven prominent Veteran Service Organizations wrote to the President:

Dear President Obama:
On behalf of the millions of veterans represented by the veterans and military service organizations that have joined our effort, we write to express our serious concerns about a policy proposal that has been discussed this week in conjunction with the release of your first budget.
