Diabetes, stem cells, and the Shaheens

Jeanne Shaheen’s grandaughter, Elle, has Type 1 diabetes. In the 2008 U.S. Senate campaign, Jeanne Shaheen used her grandaughter’s diabetes to bash Sen. John Sununu for his opposition to federal funding for stem cell research that would destroy human embryos (Sununu supported federal funding for all other types of stem cell research). Shaheen’s daughter Stefany, [...]

Shaheen uses health care meeting to raise money

After attending President Obama’s Health Care Summit, U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) emailed supporters telling them about the meeting and asking for a donation to her campaign committee.

Here is a snippet of that fundraising email:

Yesterday, I attended President Obama's Health Care Summit at the White House. I can't tell you how honored I was to be a part of this historic meeting.

You joined my campaign for U.S. Senate to help move America in a new direction. We're working everyday to make that change a reality. We're off to a good start.

After years of inaction, our government is ready to tackle some of the great challenges facing our nation.

It's Tuesday. Do You Know Where Your Senator Is ?

The U.S. Senate has taken 59 roll call votes so far this session. Starting a week ago, with vote #33, AWOL Judd has refused to vote. That is: he has played hooky on 45% of the Senate business so far this year.

On an "end the filibuster" vote, like yesterday, that isn't really true, though. His "Not Voting" has exactly the same effect as a NO vote in opposition to the President's program.

He's drawing a paycheck. But he isn't representing New Hampshire.

Hodes to run for U.S. Senate

For the last two years, I have been honored to serve the people of New Hampshire and fight for Granite Staters. I have been proud to stand up with Anne Marie Morse to pass Michelle's Law to make sure no college student will lose their health care when they need it the most.

I am proud that I fought to pass legislation to create the Northern Border Development Commission to help create jobs for the North Country.

I am proud that I stood up to create a veterans advocate in the VA to stand up for veterans like Chris Howe who needed an advocate to help get out of Walter Reed and home to his family.

Lynch Makes Deal with Gregg to Appoint Republican

It's official - the top priority in this appointment is making sure Judd Gregg has his cake and eats it too:
"I have had conversations with Senator Gregg, the White House and U.S. Senate leadership. Senator Gregg has said he would not resign his seat in the U.S. Senate if it changed the balance in the Senate. Based on my discussions, it is clear the White House and Senate leadership understand this as well.

"It is important that President Obama be able to select the advisors he feels are necessary to help him address the challenges facing our nation.

"If President Obama does nominate Senator Gregg to serve as Commerce Secretary, I will name a replacement who will put the people of New Hampshire first and represent New Hampshire effectively in the U.

Shaheen declares victory

MANCHESTER--Former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) has declared victory in her challenge to U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley).

"Today the people of New Hampshire spoke at the ballot box," Shaheen said. "And they said loud and clear they want a new direction. Today New Hampshire voters said they want a senator that will be a strong independent vote."

Shaheen is the first Democrat from New Hampshire to be elected to the U.S. Senate in 30 years and will be the first female to represent New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate.

Sununu concedes to Shaheen

BEDFORD--U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) has conceded the Senate race to his opponent former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury).

"Really there's nothing more exciting than laying out your case and letting the voters speak," Sununu told supporters. "Tonight unfortunately the voters spoke, and we didn't have enough votes. The fact remains it's a privilege to participate in the democratic process."

Sununu's defeat marks the first time he has ever lost an election in the Granite State.

U.S. Senate race offers stark contrasts in political environment

A lot has changed since Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) and John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) first ran against one another for the U.S. Senate seat in 2002.

Sununu is now the incumbent Republican Senator, while Shaheen comes to the race having spent the last couple of years working at Harvard and chairing John Kerry's presidential campaign.

In 2002, the day before Election Day, a UNH poll had Sununu with a one percent lead over Shaheen. Now that same poll shows Shaheen with a six-point lead over Sununu.
