A Democratic State Should Have A Democratic Attorney General - And Some Possible Candidates

Next month, Governor Lynch will have an opportunity to decide on who would best serve as the State of New Hampshire's lawyer for the next five years. I believe he should listen to clearly expressed will of the people of the state and appoint someone who shares their values - in other words, a Democrat.
It would be very easy for Lynch to simply re-appoint Kelly Ayotte and the easy approach is very often the preferred option for elected officials. This would be a bad idea for a number of reasons, but, I'll limit my criticism to just one case.

AWOL Gregg Creating True Bipartisanship

Interesting UL piece on Gregg's refusal to do his job while waiting to be confirmed.

While we've been running hard with the AWOL Gregg meme for over a week now, the piece is interesting in that it shows figures from the left and the right, as polar opposite as Kathy Sullivan and Grover Norquist, united in their disappointment over Gregg's inability to cast votes that represent New Hampshire during this critical time.

But the most telling of all: who are the only two people defending Gregg?  Warren Rudman, and the person who declared Gregg's relection all but a shoo-in:Andrew Smith, an associate political science professor at UNH, said Gregg was in a "damned-if-you-do-or-damned-if-you-don't situation."Isn't it fascinating how Judd Gregg has managed this entire adventure to his and Mitch's benefit?

A Taxonomy of Senate Appointments

Let's move up 20,000 feet from the individual names. What are the different types of appointment that Governor Lynch could make? I come up with five categories:

  1. A frontrunning Democrat who will run in 2010. In the current environment his translates to Paul Hodes or Carol Shea Porter.
  2. A dark horse Democrat who will run in 2010. The lightest of the dark horses are the 2006 Senate candidates who stepped aside: Jay Buckey, Steve Marchand, and Katrina Swett. But there are darker horses in the stable: Senator Molly Kelly or John Hutson, for example.
  3. A Democrat who will not run in 2010. This is sometimes dismissively called a "seatwarmer" or "placeholder.

Small, But Key Point on Gregg Speculation

* It is extremely unlikely that Obama floated this idea to the Senate leaders et alii without also talking to Gregg, who himself openly says to the press that he regularly is in contact with the Adminsitration on economic issues.

* Gregg has issued a stiff "no comment" to all outlets.

* The likely conclusion? Whether or not Gregg is offered or takes the job, he was/is open to it.

That will have political ramifications for him regardless of the outcome.

Rudman calls Sununu 'lone voice' on financial oversight

Former New Hampshire U.S. Sen. Warren Rudman defended U.S. Sen. John Sununu's (R-Waterville Valley) stance on the financial bailout and said Sununu has been at the forefront of reforms for various financial institutions.

Rudman told reporters on a conference call that Sununu offered legislation to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac years ago but was blocked by congressional Democrats.

"He was one of lone voices to point out that the situation with Fannie and Freddie was really dangerous, that the government ought to improve its regulation," Rudman said.

Limbaugh goes after Rudman

Talk radio show host Rush Limbaugh spent most of his radio show today attacking the conservative credentials of John McCain. To bolster his attack he went directly after former New Hampshire U.S. Senator Warren Rudman who serves as a national co-chair of McCain's campaign. He also goes after New Hampshire native David Souter.

Here is the "rush" transcript from Limbaugh's website.
