Don't Hold Your Breath

Any conservatives, small government proponents, or 'right wing talkers' holding their breath waiting for apologies from the fever swamps of the left now that this news has come out?
A Kentucky census worker found naked, bound with duct tape and hanging from a tree with "fed" scrawled on his chest killed himself but staged his death to make it look like a homicide, authorities said Tuesday.

Bill Sparkman, 51, was found Sept. 12 with a rope around his neck near a cemetery in a heavily wooded area of the Daniel Boone National Forest in southeastern Kentucky. Authorities said his wrists were loosely bound, his glasses were taped to his head and he was gagged.

House Socialized Medicine Bill DOA In Senate

Good news:
The glow from a health care triumph faded quickly for President Barack Obama on Sunday as Democrats realized the bill they fought so hard to pass in the House has nowhere to go in the Senate.

Speaking from the Rose Garden about 14 hours after the late Saturday vote, Obama urged senators to be like runners on a relay team and "take the baton and bring this effort to the finish line on behalf of the American people."

The problem is that the Senate won't run with it. The government health insurance plan included in the House bill is unacceptable to a few Democratic moderates who hold the balance of power in the Senate.

Sarah Palin's Greatest Gift

I just had one of those revelation things, I think. You know, when something just jumps into your head and the light goes on and all that.

Now, the first thing to keep in mind is that the following is nothing more than wild speculation on my part. It could be 100% wrong. It is nearly 100% certain that I am not 100% correct. Just keep that in mind as you read. And remember that this is more what I sort of think at this point and not what others, including the ex-Gov may be thinking/planning.

Sarah Palin has, to an extent, removed herself from the bright spotlight of the press while continuing to dominate debates with simple Facebook posts.

Unemployed Blows Past 10%

As expected (in some quarters):
News that the unemployment rate for October climbed more than expected to a 25-year high of 10.2% amid a steeper-than-expected decline in monthly nonfarm payrolls has sent stock futures markedly lower.
Anyone that read my Wednesday post saw that this week's unemployment was going to come in worse than expected. Indeed I heard on the radio this morning that the predicted rate was going to be just under 10%. I figured no way. And it clocked in at 10.2% with more losses than expected. So not only do you probably have a situation where the press was playing up the 'recovery' which drew some job seekers back into the hunt, but you also had more losses than expected.

AP's Initial VA Report Very Honest

Cheers to the AP for the initial brief filed on the victory in Virginia for Republican Bob McDonnell. This is, of course, a severe blow to the Washington Post that exerted massive efforts to derail McDonnell, dredging up college papers or some such nonsense and trying to create a surge against him. It failed.

The initial brief from the AP is quick and honest - hard to tell if this type of honest, sober analysis will continue through tomorrow's post-mortems. I've underlined the stuff I'm (pleasantly) surprised the included:
Republicans wrested political control of Virginia from the Democrats on Tuesday as independent voters swung behind the GOP, a troubling sign for President Barack Obama and his party heading into an important midterm election year.

Let The Desperate Spinning Begin

Let's see...

Congressional approval is still absolutely appalling.

Republicans continue to lead the generic ballot poll.

Republicans are trusted over Democrats on each of the 10 key polled categories.

Since the Democrats took over Congress the economy has gone into a recession and since Obama has taken office the unemployment rate has "skyrocketed" to 10% with no signs of easing in sight or predicted for at least 2 years - the ruling party calls their actions in dealing with this as "succeeding beyond their wildest dreams"...which makes voters wonder what their dreams are.

The ruling party has lost seats in midterm elections with clocklike regularity (only in 2002 did the GOP buck this trend).

23 Skidoo

IBD's view:
But the reason Hoffman was able to end Scozzafava's candidacy is that the people in NY-23 preferred a Reaganite citizen politician to a party machinist doing an impersonation of liberal Sen. Olympia Snowe, the Maine Republican.

Now that Scozzafava has, in an act of incalculable pettiness, endorsed the Democrat in the race, Bill Owens, Gingrich looks like a professor at the Mister Magoo school of political science.

The Politico reports, "the White House got Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, one of the most powerful figures in the state, and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to place calls to the assemblywoman on Saturday evening to coax her into" endorsing her former Democratic opponent in the race.

Left! Left! Left - right - left!

Have you found yourself increasingly tilting your head at the news over the past few months? Squinting a bit? Cocking your head at an angle?

Does it seem like something just doesn't seem right - but you can't quite put your finger on it. Like when you hear a faint buzzing but you can't quite figure out what's making it.

Maybe I can help.

It's really this whole bizarro, pathetic Dede Scozzafava thing that finally brought the light on over my head. Particularly with headlines like this:

The Collapse of Dede Scozzafava, Moderate Republican

Scozzafava and the GOP civil war
Besieged by the hard right, moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava withdrew from NY-23: Is the GOP going too extreme?

Politico Plays Fast And Loose With The Facts

This odd (as in: hard to understand) headline had me clicking through to read more: Iowa GOP-ers wince at Palin fee. Turns out to be a story about speaking fees, stuck-up Republicans in Iowa (politicians should feel honored if we let them come speak to us!), and Sarah Palin. But there's a problem with the entire premise of the article, the central fact that has everyone so twitterpated. This is a long story, I'm just going to pull out the items that are directly related to the central premise of the story - even then you'll see there are a lot, underlining making it more obvious:
Rather than exciting conservatives about the prospect of a visit from the former Alaska governor, the group’s plan to raise a six-figure sum to bring her to the state has GOP activists recoiling at the thought of paying to land a politician's speaking appearance.

Reaching All The Wong Conclusions

So there's this nice front page story about how "(t)he U.S. health care system is just as wasteful as President Barack Obama says it is". Gee, what a genius. Like no one has ever pointed that out before.

However, the heavy lifting (aka water carrying) by the press really takes off with the rest of the article:

"One example -- a paper-based system that discourages sharing of medical records accounts for 6 percent of annual overspending.

"It is waste when caregivers duplicate tests because results recorded in a patient's record with one provider are not available to another or when medical staff provides inappropriate treatment because relevant history of previous treatment cannot be accessed," the report reads.
