Portman has almost $1.5 million warchest

Rob Portman, the former eight-term Congressman, U.S. Trade Representative and OMB Director, has $1,484,972 remaining in a federal campaign account.  That gives him a substantial leg up on other possible Republican primary contenders if George Voinovich decides not to seek re-election to a third term in the U.S. Senate in 2010.

The Portman for Congress campaign continues to employ a staffer, Esther Heller Tombragel, who was the Special Projects Director in his congressional office.

Of the Republican House members, Steve Chabot has the biggest warchest -- $1.1 million as of March 31 – but he’ll need to spend most of it to win re-election this year.  With $757,719, Pat Tiberi is second.
