FEC releases report on special election in OH-11 as filing deadline passes

The Federal Elections Commission released its report on guidelines and deadlines for the special election in Ohio's 11th Congressional District, one day after the September 2 filing deadline for replacement candidates to fill out the term of U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who died suddenly August 20.

Cuyahoga County Democrats will meet on September 11 to choose a replacement for Tubbs Jones on the November 4 ballot. Members of the party's executive committee who live in the district are eligible to vote for the replacement candidate.

Cuyahoga County Commission Peter Lawson Jones has ruled himself out as a potential candidate.

Those vying to replace Tubbs Jones in the seat include former state Sen. and Gov. Ted Strickland education advisor C.J. Prentiss, former Cleveland city councilman Bill Patmon, Warrensville Heights Mayor Marcia Fudge and Ohio Legislative Black Caucus executive director and former state Sen. Jeffrey Johnson.

Johnson was seeking the 11th Congressional District seat in 1998 when he was indicted and later convicted for accepting $17,000 in contributions for helping grocers obtain liqueur, lottery and welfare food coupon licenses. Johnson served time in federal prison and now says his felony will not stop him from running for the seat as it has been expunged.

The FEC special election report notice lays out the candidate committee pre-primary filing deadline as October 2, and the October Quarterly filing deadline as October 15. These deadlines apply to only candidate committees involved in the special primary on October 14.

For candidate committees in both the special primary and special election on November 18, the pre-primary October 2 and October Quarterly October 15 deadlines still apply, as well as the pre-general filing deadline of November 6 and the post-general filing deadline of December 18.
