Democrats meeting to replace Tubbs Jones Thursday night

Democratic leaders from Cleveland will meet Thursday night at Euclid High School to pick a candidate for the seat previously held by the late U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones.

Tubbs Jones represented Ohio's 11 Congressional District, and passed away last month after suffering an Aneurism.

Cuyahoga County Democrats will meet to choose a replacement for Tubbs Jones on the Nov. 4 ballot.

A special election is also slated to fill out the remainder of Tubbs Jones' term. Gov. Ted Strickland called for the special election to be held November 18 with a primary October 14, if necessary. Strickland said that an Ohio court ruling required that he call the special election, even though the winner of that election would only serve a couple weeks and see very few actual working days in Congress.

The nominee for the position selected Thursday night will face Republican Thomas Pekarek on Nov. 4, and has high odds of being the next representative of Ohio's 11th district.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, and former 11th District U.S. Rep. Louis Stokes have both endorsed Warrensville Heights Mayor Marcia Fudge for the nomination. Fudge is a former Tubbs Jones Chief of Staff.

Others vying to replace Tubbs Jones in the seat include former state Sen. and Gov. Ted Strickland education advisor C.J. Prentiss, former Cleveland city councilman Bill Patmon, and Ohio Legislative Black Caucus executive director and former state Sen. Jeffrey Johnson.
