Cuyahoga Dems select Fudge to run for Tubbs Jones seat

Cuyahoga County Democratic leaders selected Warrensville Heights Mayor Marcia Fudge to replace the late U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones as the Democratic nominee on the Nov. 4 ballot in Ohio's 11th Congressional District.

Fudge has previously worked as Tubbs Jones' chief of staff and had received the endorsement of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Tubbs Jones' predecessor in the 11th District seat, Louis Stokes.

Fudge was selected from a field of five with a vote of 175 out of 281 votes cast by the Cuyahoga County executive committee.

Others vying to replace Tubbs Jones in the seat include former state Sen. and Gov. Ted Strickland education advisor C.J. Prentiss, former Cleveland city councilman Bill Patmon, the Rev. Marvin McMickle and Ohio Legislative Black Caucus executive director and former state Sen. Jeffrey Johnson.

The same group of contenders filed to run in the Oct. 14 Democratic primary for the right to advance to a Nov. 18 special election.

Fudge will be running against Republican engineer Thomas Pekarek.
