NRCC files FEC complaint against Patriot Majority

The liberal advocacy group Patriot Majority is the target of an Federal Elections Commission complaint by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

NRCC chair Tom Cole sent a letter to the FEC today, provided to PolitickerOH.com from the NRCC, asking the commission to investigate Patriot Majority for not defining itself as a federal political committee.

Patriot Majority is registered as a 527 and not required by law to disclose its contributions or be subject to contribution limits. Cole claims Patriot Majority's attacks on GOP congressional candidates means it's operating as a regular political committee.

"Patriot Majority's blatant attacks of Republican candidates clearly demonstrate that its major purpose is to influence Federal elections," Cole wrote.

Patriot Majority has used paid-media to attack Ohio Republicans, U.S. Reps. Jean Schmidt and Steve Chabot, as well as congressional candidates Steve Stivers and Kirk Schuring. Elsewhere, Patriot Majority has attacked U.S. Reps. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), Steve Pearce (R-N.M.), Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich.) and U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-N.H.).
