Police investigating leaked report involving candidate

A political attack is coming under investigation by law enforcement after a police report was leaked about an alleged bar fight involving a Republican state House candidate.

PolitickerOH.com broke the story of the leaked report involving 1st state House district candidate Caroline Hergenrother. The report was sent by Cliff Schecter, who is a communications consultant for the House Democratic Caucus. The Salem Police Department and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are pursuing possible investigations into the distribution of the report detailing witness accounts involving Hergenrother.

Salem Police Chief Robert Floor told PolitickerOH.com that the leaker could face disciplinary action or even criminal charges.

“Whether or not there would be any criminal charges would be up to the law director and county prosecutor,” Floor said. “Internally it could vary from either a suspension up to job dismissal, depending on the purposes and motives, et cetera, that might be involved.”

Floro said he requested BCI's help because it has more skill at investigating electronic communications and will prevent the perception of an internal cover up by the police department if nothing’s found. Floor said BCI hasn’t confirmed that an investigation will take place but the bureau’s investigator has asked him follow-up questions.

Floor said he’s never encountered a leak from his department.

“This is the first one of these, at least since I’ve been chief, that we’ve had to deal with,” he said.

Floor said the department is still investigating the alleged fight involving Hergenrother. The police report said she left the scene before a unit arrived and spoke with witnesses.
