State rep. blasted for $434K in back taxes

[img_assist|nid=1565|title=The ODP mailer against Schlichter|desc=Ohio Democratic Party|link=none|align=left|width=421|height=300] (R-Washington Court House) is coming under attack by Democrats through direct mail over unpaid taxes.

In a mailer sent by the Ohio Democratic Party, Schlichter is accused of not paying $434,000 in taxes after voting to raise state taxes by $2.5 billion.

As the Chillicothe Gazette reports, next week Schlichter will go to municipal court to see if it will appoint a trustee to attend to his debt, which is listed as $418,000. If one is appointed, Schlichter will have a quarter of his monthly net pay garnished to pay creditors and the Internal Revenue Service.

Schlichter is in debt after the liquidation of his family farm two years ago. He owes money to the IRS for taxes on farm equipment, he said.

House Democratic Caucus communications consultant Clifford Schecter said if the Republican representative can’t handle his own pocket book, he can’t be sent back to Columbus.

"If John Schlichter wants to mismanage his finances worse than AIG that is his business. But when he expects us to bail him out after he eagerly supported the Taft Tax Plan that raised middle class taxes by $2.5 billion, it is really quite shameless,” Schecter said.

Schlichter is facing Ray Pryor (D-Chillicothe) in the race for the 85th state House district, one of the most competitive state House races in Ohio.
