Schuring issues 'fact check' after Wooster debate

The campaign of state Sen. Kirk Schuring (R-Jackson Township) is out with a "fact-check" memo following the debate in Wooster with opponent state Sen. John Boccieri (D-Alliance).

The two squared-off for their first face-to-face debate sponsored by the Coalition for the Support of Business and Jobs in Wooster.

The Schuring camp is now out with a memo saying that Boccieri "made a number of statements during Wednesday night's debate that reveal his lack of understanding of the issues and the workings of the federal government."

Boccieri spokesperson Bryan Collinsworth said that the "fact-check" had some "serious factual errors" and will be responding in greater detail later.

The first "blunder" that the Schuring points to is what they say was Boccieri calling regulatory reform a "giveaway to Wall Streeet." Schuring says that regulatory reform is actually "used to keep companies from giving out bad loans that will create an unnecessary risk of taxpayers' dollars."

The second "blunder," according to the Schuring campaign, is what they termed Boccieri saying President Bush should have enforced SEC regulations. Schuring says that this is the role of Congress.

The Schuring camp is claiming Boccieri distorted the status of the nation's natural gas by making "claims" that they "are tapped out or inaccessible." The Schuring campaign says that surveys have shown "vast amounts" of oil and natural gas in ANWR and offshore.

The Schuring camp also accused Boccieri of "double talk," saying that Boccieri "says he is against the free market being involved in healthcare" while reiterating "his position favoring a universal health care system, saying it should be an employer-based system" as well as "a portable system."

The Schuring camp says that employer-based health care systems are in direct opposition to health care being portable between jobs.

"Once again this shows Mr. Boccieri's failure to grasp the issues and challenges that lie ahead," said Schuring campaign manager PJ Wenzel. "Kirk Schuring has sound plans and has remained consistent on the issues, while his opponent seems to be all over the board."

As stated before, PolitickerOH.com is awaiting a more detailed response from the Boccieri campaign.
