Anti-tax group calls Schmidt 'worst kind of tax and spend Republican'

Updated - An anti-tax group is hammering a TV ad from U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland) and her record on taxes.

The Coalition Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes is pointing to a Schmidt advertisement in which she says she advocates "lower taxes, smarter government regulation and less government spending."

COAST says that Schmidt's record in the Ohio legislature and the U.S. Congress paint a different picture.

"Jean Schmidt is the worst kind of tax-and-spend Republican," said  COAST chair Jason Gloyd. "Schmidt voted for every tax hike [former Ohio Gov.] Bob Taft asked her to and she supports wasteful congressional earmarks that dole out hard-earned taxpayer money like a sailor on shore leave."

Update:

Schmidt spokesperson Bruce Pfaff noted COAST's repeated support for Republican primary opponent Tom Brinkman, saying that nothing the organization had to say was worthy of comment.

"They've proven that they hate the Congresswoman," Pfaff said. "And it's personal."

Pfaff said the organization engages in "nasty" and "personal" attacks and are continuing to do so.

Gloyd also criticized Schmidt for her recent vote for the Emergency Economic Stabilization "bailout" Act.

"No one who voted for the $700 billion government bailout can claim to be for lower taxes, smarter government regulation and lower government spending," Gloyd said. "At a time time when a return to Republican principles is needed more than ever, Jean Schmidt continues to be a Republican in name only."

Pfaff called the organization "angry" and "bitter."
