Schmidt asks U.S. Attorney to investigate Wulsin financial disclosures

The campaign of U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland) followed through on an earlier threat, and has now asked U.S. Attorney Gregory Lockhart to investigate allegations that opponent Dr. Victoria Wulsin (D-Indian Hill) failed to file, and filed false information, on her federal financial disclosure documents.

In September the Schmidt campaign had asked Wulsin to correct or amend her federally required filings. Schmidt spokesperson Bruce Pfaff said she has failed to do so.

"It is unfortunate that Mrs. Wulsin has forced us to make this request," Pfaff said. "She and her campaign have a legal and ethical responsibility to file timely and accurate reports; obviously she feels she is above the law."

The Schmidt campaign said that Wulsin failed to file a report in 2005, the first year she became a candidate for Congress. The Schmidt camp also said Wulsin filed inaccurate reports in 2006 and 2007, which they called a clear violation of the law.

The Schmidt camp is pointing to a 1,100 acre farm Wulsin owns in Pike County having "suddenly appeared in a financial disclosure report this year even though she has owned it since 1993." The Schmidt camp says that Wulsin has also failed to report any income from its operation prior to this year, "even though it appears to be a working farm."

"We gave Mrs. Wulsin more than ample time to correct her filings, her failure to do so shows an obvious disregard for the public's right to know and the rule of law," said Pfaff. "If she has nothing to hide why won't she correct her filing?"

Wulsin campaign spokesperson Kevin Franck said the letter came out of Schmidt campaign struggles. "Jean Schmidt's ship is sinking and she's clearly getting desperate," said Franck.
