Schmidt camp hits back on DCCC ad, says Dems lie when facts aren’t on their side

The campaign of U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland) hit back on the second ad being run by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District, saying it was merely spreading new lies on top of a pack of old lies.

Schmidt spokesperson Bruce Pfaff said that Democrats lie when they don't have the facts on their side.

"It's an out-and-out fabrication," Pfaff said, referring to the ad's claim that Schmidt voted for a Congressional pay raise. "They should be ashamed of themselves for lying to voters like that."

Pfaff said the DCCC put three year-old headlines from various newspapers in the ad. As an example, Pfaff pointed to the ad quoting the Cincinnati Enquirer, which Pfaff noted has endorsed Schmidt two elections in a row.

"They continue to talk about a pay raise that was never voted on," Pfaff said. "Their citation continues to be wrong."

In the ad, the DCCC hits Schmidt for voting for a pay raise. However, there is no bill anymore that funds a pay raise for members of Congress. Congressional salaries automatically go up annually unless a bill is passed to prevent it.

Pfaff said that the citation the DCCC uses in the ad to support the pay raise claim actually refers to a House Resolution that was a motion to return to the previous question. Pfaff said that this means it was a motion to end debate and get to voting about the funding of government. He said there was no pay raise in that bill.

"The fact of the matter is the Congresswoman, along with her Republican colleagues, led the fight to stop a pay raise in 2006 and 2007," Pfaff said. "It just didn't happen. There was never a vote on a pay raise."

Pfaff said that the campaign has not yet talked about asking TV stations to remove the ad, as it has done with the first DCCC ad run in Ohio's 2nd.

Pfaff also took umbrage with the ad questioning Schmidt's support for veterans.

"They continue to talk about the veterans when everyone knows that Congresswoman Schmidt is one of the biggest supporters of veterans' issues in the U.S. House of Representatives," Pfaff said.

Pfaff pointed to Schmidt being the only Republican representative in Ohio to receive an "A" rating from the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Schmidt is being challenged by Dr. Victoria Wulsin (D-Indian Hill) and businessman David Krikorian (I-Madeira).
