Brunner updates on court orders, complaints and turnout at statehouse

COLUMBUS - Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner (D) said that as of now there are no court orders this evening and the polls have closed on time.

Brunner said that votes are being tabulated, and said the Ohio Republican Party filed an amended version of a complaint in a dormant lawsuit. The lawsuit dealt with provisional ballots and instructions for county boards of elections for conducting the vote count.

Brunner said Ohio Attorney General Nancy Rogers has asked the cases be consolidated.

Brunner said that the boards are continuing to tabulate results.

When asked if 2008 will show a record of turnout in Ohio, Brunner said that turnout figures were not final but would probably not reach her previous projection of 80 percent. She said 2004 will probably continue to hold the record, when turnout was in the 70th percentile.

Brunner attributed preparation, partnership with the boards of elections and early voting as alleviating stress at the polls Tuesday.

On the GOP complaint, Brunner said it was her understanding that the complaint just rehashed issues that have already been dealt with. She said she understood the nature of the matter to be that they were complaining various processes might make too much work for the board of elections.

Brunner said that it doesn't matter if the board of elections has a heavy workload, as long as the vote count is accurate.
