Harris, Niehaus, Faber, Wagner seek Senate GOP leadership

Four Republicans are campaigning for Senate GOP leadership positions.

Senate President Bill Harris (R-Ashland) will run for re-election, while state Sens. Tom Niehaus (R-New Richmond), Keith Faber (R-Celina) and Mark Wagner (R-Toledo) are campaigning inside the caucus for leadership posts. Next Tuesday the caucus is expected to meet and elect its leaders for the 128th General Assembly.

Niehaus said he’s running for president pro-tempore. Niehaus and state Sen. Steve Austria (R-Beaver) told PolitickerOH.com that Faber is seeking the position of majority leader and that Wagner is running for the position of majority whip.

Niehaus said the position of president pro-tempore serves as a leader and liaison between the president and all senators on legislative issues.

“As the leadership team we will be the people sitting in the room with President Harris when talking about various policies that we want to get enacted in Ohio,” he said. “We will be working in conjunction with our colleagues in the Senate on those issues and we will be among those leading the effort and leading the policy discussion.

Niehaus said Senate Republican leaders will communicate with Democratic state House leaders and with individual members in the House on legislation.
