Names being bandied about to join Budish and Szollosi in leadership

On Election Day, Ohio Democrats picked up a majority in the Ohio House of Representatives, thanks in no small part to the fundraising prowess and campaign efforts of state Rep. Armond Budish (D-Beachwood).

The next morning, Ohio Democratic Party Chair Chris Redfern (D-Catawba Island) was already referring to Budish as speaker, but this title won't be official until state House Democrats convene on Tuesday to pick their new leadership team.

This summer, Budish essentially solidified his status as the next leader of the House Democrats when he struck a deal with his most formidable challenge for the role, state Rep. Matt Szollosi (D-Oregon). State Rep. Ted Celeste (D-Grandview Heights) had also expressed interest in the leadership position.

The freshman team of Budish and Szollosi spent much of the campaign season working to take back the Ohio House, and were joined on the trail by some legislators who now look to join the two as part of the leadership for Ohio's 128th General Assembly.

State Rep. Jennifer Garrison (D-Marietta) is one of those names being mentioned by Statehouse Democrats, and was even present with Budish and Redfern on the Statehouse steps when the Democrats announced they would be taking back the Ohio House during the campaign.

Another name being mentioned as moving into a leadership position is state Rep. Tracy Heard (D-Columbus). Heard is also currently a freshman legislator and has served as secretary of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus.

State Rep. Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) would bring many years of experience to the team, having previously served in the Ohio House from 1983 until he was forced out by term limits in 2000. Sykes is currently finishing his first term back in the legislative body.

State Rep. Allan Sayre (D-Dover) is finishing his second term as a member of the House, and has been mentioned by Democrats as a possibility for leadership. When state Rep. Jay Goyle (D-Mansfield) was elected to the state House in 2006, he became the first Asian-American elected to serve in the Ohio Legislature. His name has also been mentioned as possibly receiving a leadership position.

Some Democrats also aren't counting out the possibility that Celeste will also be voted into leadership.

With Budish presumably getting the speaker position, and Szollosi presumably coming up with the number two spot of Speaker Pro-Tempore, there are four positions remaining in the House majority leadership.

Those positions include majority floor leader and assistant majority floor leader, as well as majority whip and assistant majority whip. Democrats declined to speculate as to which legislators may fill which positions.
