ORP lays blame for 'Plumber' record search on Strickland

The Ohio Republican Party wants you to remember that Helen Jones-Kelley is part of Gov. Ted Strickland's (D) cabinet.

Jones-Kelly was suspended by Strickland from her position as director of the Job and Family Services Department following the inspector general's report found she improperly authorized searches of files on Samuel "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher in October.

Jones-Kelly was also found to have improperly used state email to raise money for Barack Obama.

"This is another example of the governor turning state government into a political party," said ORP Deputy Chairman Kevin DeWine in a statement. "Now one of his own cabinet members is accused of using state resources to raise money for a political campaign and improperly accessing the government records of a private citizen presumably with political motives."

Strickland's office released a statement Thursday saying he accepted the inspector general's findings and is taking action as a result.

"Therefore, today I have issued a one-month unpaid suspension for Director Helen Jones-Kelley. Additionally, I am issuing a management directive – applicable to all state agencies, boards and commissions – regarding the proper use of state databases to help ensure that a situation such as this never happens again.”
