A large and questionable campaign donation received by state Treasurer Richard Cordray from the stepdaughter of an investment broker who's firm was working with the treasurer's office was not given to Cordray shortly after he was inaugurated, as had been previously believed. Cordray's campaign has alerted the Ohio Elections Commission that the donation actually came in 2008.

The Dayton Daily News reported in October that Lindsey Kuty, stepdaughter of Wachovia broker Montford Will, donated $10,000 to Cordray's campaign shortly after he was inaugurated in January 2007, and Cordray's disclosure form filed with the secretary of state showed the donation date as Jan. 27, 2007.

After that campaign contribution, Wachovia's share of bond trading from Cordray's office jumped from 1 to 38 percent. In addition, Will said his wife gave Kuty the same amount of money she donated to Cordray. Both matters caused Republican attorney general candidate Mike Crites to file a complaint with the Ohio Elections Commission alleging that the donation was illegally made by Will in Kuty's name and as such it violated contribution limits for state contractors.

However, the elections commission said Friday Cordray's campaign notified it on Nov. 4 that Kuty's donation was made in 2008 and provided a copy of her check for proof. Two days later the campaign filed an amendment to their finance report changing the date to 2008, according to the secretary of state's office.  

Cordray said his campaign misdated the deposit slip for the check as "2007" because the transactions occurred in early 2008, before the depositor was mindful of the new year.

"We didn't realize it until the complaint was filed with the elections commission and we were preparing for the response to that complaint," Cordray said.

Cordray's campaign refunded the $10,000 to Kuty October.

Crites' complaint is still being heard by the commission.
