Fmr. treasurer candidates unlikely to get appointment

Two Democrats who've run for state treasurer said they have not spoken to Gov. Ted Strickland's office about being appointed to fill current Treasurer Richard Cordray's position.

Montgomery County Recorder Willis Blackshear told PolitickerOH.com that he has not spoken to Strickland's office about an appointment to treasurer now that Cordray is moving to the attorney general's office. Blackshear ran for the Democratic treasurer nomination in 2002 but lost to Mary Boyle.

"No, I have not talked to anyone in the governor's administration about the position at all," Blackshear said, adding that this doesn't mean he's not interested in an appointment.

Cuyahoga County Treasurer Jim Rokakis told PolitickerOH.com on Monday that Blackshear was one of the names he heard as a possible appointment for treasurer. Rokakis said "somebody close" to Strickland told him that the appointee will be an African-American. Blackshear is Montgomery County's first African-American recorder and served in the county treasurer's office for 22 years.

Blackshear said the only names he's heard regarding a treasurer appointment are Columbus city councilman Kevin Boyce and Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory. Mallory took himself out of consideration last month.

Hugh Quill, who ran against Cordray in the 2006 primary, and is now director of the Department of Administrative Services, laughed off the idea when spokesperson Roy Sylvester raised it.

"He just laughed and said ‘I'm too busy,'" Sylvester said, adding that as DAS director he has multiple responsibilities across the government.

"He's not politicking for this one," Sylvester said. "As far as public service goes there's not a better place he can be than at DAS right now."

Quill was appointed to DAS by Strickland in February 2007 and was Montgomery County treasurer for 13 years.
