Kilroy sets priorities at victory press conference

COLUMBUS -- U.S. Representative-elect Mary Jo Kilroy set about listing her priorities when she arrives in Congress during a press conference held outside of the Franklin County Board of Elections office Sunday night.

Kilroy won election to the U.S. House late Sunday after the elections board finished its unofficial count of votes including provisional ballots. Thirty-three days after Election Day and two years after her first failed run for the 15th Congressional District seat, Kilroy beat Republican Steve Stivers by 2,311 votes.

Kilroy said her campaign is already working with U.S. Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus) to ensure constituent issues are followed through by Kilroy and to guarantee a smooth transition overall.

Kilroy said her first job is bringing jobs to the district.

"The key to a real strong economic recovery is to get people back to work," she said.

Continuing to learn from and have a dialogue with constituents is also a top priority, she said.

"I want to have a lot of dialgoue with my constituents. I need to hear from them because I learn from them and when I understand what their needs and problems are I can work more effectively in Washington to fashion the legislation and remedies so that we can make this community on the road to economic recovery."

Kilroy said she spoke to Stivers before her press conference and thanked him for his graciousness and wished him good luck.

Tonight's celebration will be "low key" with pizza, she said.
