Three Republican U.S. reps defect on auto bailout vote

Corrected - All but three of Ohio’s Republican U.S. representatives voted against giving General Motors and Chrysler $14 billion in loans so they do not run out of money.

U.S. Reps. Steve LaTourette (R-Bainbridge Twp.) and Ralph Regula (R-Navarre) voted in favor of the loans. Regula is retiring and will be replaced by John Boccieri (D-Alliance). U.S. Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus) didn’t vote at all. Pryce is retiring and will be replaced by Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Columbus).

Defeated U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) voted against loans. So did Republicans who were reelected, including U.S. Reps. Mike Turner, Bob Latta, Pat Tiberi, Jean Schmidt, Jim Jordan and John Boehner. Retiring U.S. Rep. David Hobson (R-Springfield) also voted against loans but his seat will be held by Republican Steve Austria (R-Beavercreek) next year.

Boehner argued in favor of a Republican House alternative that would use private capital to help auto companies as opposed to federal money.

The total U.S. House vote was 237 in favor and 170 opposed.

The bill moves to the U.S. Senate next for a vote scheduled Thursday.
