Redfern hits Ohio GOP Reps who voted against auto aid legislation

Ohio Democratic Party chairman Chris Redfern slammed various Ohio Republican U.S. Representatives Thursday for voting against legislation to provide bridge loans to the U.S. auto industry.

Ohio Republicans voting against the measure included U.S. Reps. Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati), Mike Turner (R-Centerville), Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green), Pat Tiberi (R-Westerville), Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland), Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-West Chester) as well as retiring U.S. Rep. David Hobson (R-Springfield).

U.S. Reps. Steve LaTourette (R-Bainbridge Twp.) and Ralph Regula (R-Navarre) voted in favor of the loans. Regula is retiring and will be replaced by John Boccieri (D-Alliance). U.S. Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus) didn't vote on the measure. Pryce is retiring and will be replaced by Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Columbus).

Redfern said that more than 250,000 Ohioans depend on jobs related to the auto industry to work and support their families.

"A vote against this desperately needed rescue measure is a vote against Ohio jobs and the families that they support," Redfern said. "I am disappointed that Ohio's Republican members of Congress would side against more than 250,000 Ohio workers at a time when our economy is already suffering."

Redfern gave specific attention to Latta, who issued a statement earlier Thursday explaining his vote.

"In particular, I am shocked that congressmen like Bob Latta, whose district includes so many auto jobs, would choose partisanship over the best interests of his constituents by towing the Republican party line," Redfern said.

Boehner announced his support Wednesday for alternative auto industry aid legislation offered up by House Republicans. Both Latta and Schmidt have said that they support this alternative legislation.
