Kindergarten not easy fit

View the original

In Grandview Heights, the art room would have to give up its space to a kindergarten classroom and the subject become a traveling course, sort of an "art on a cart" situation, Superintendent Ed O'Reilly said.

In Wednesday's State of the State address, Gov. Ted Strickland proposed several sweeping education reforms, including funding all-day kindergarten for all children.

It was not clear yesterday when Strickland wants the program to start.

But in a briefing with education advocates yesterday, the governor's staff said the administration understands that classroom space will be an issue, and it might allow schools to use nontraditional buildings such as child-care centers or community facilities. Districts also might be able to seek waivers to postpone offering all-day kindergarten until facilities are available.
