Strickland names 2 OSU trustees

Each appointment replaced an outgoing member with similar experience.

Jerry Jurgensen of Columbus, who was the chief executive officer of Nationwide for nine years, replaced Dimon McPherson, who retired as Nationwide CEO in 2000. Jurgensen also had served as executive vice president of Bank One Corp. in Chicago.

McPherson, of Powell, served nine years on the OSU board.

Strickland also appointed Janet Reid of Cincinnati. She is the principal partner of Global Lead Management Consulting and also worked as a research chemist for 10 years at Procter & Gamble Co. She is past chairwoman of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce.

Reid replaces G. Gilbert Cloyd on the OSU board, a former veterinarian who is chief technology officer at Procter & Gamble.

While Commissioners point fingers, Diana Chatman must not have been paying attention…

So, the media started focusing on the Connecting Point, as those of you who watched Fox Toledo yesterday saw covered just prior to my first Rant & Rave and as you’ll notice if you read today’s Blade. I’d laugh if it were not such a sad situation and if there was not so much misinformation out there as well as no investigation, journalistic or otherwise taking place with the exception of here. When I read, Attack on closed agency is ‘personal,’ Konop says, ALL three of the Commissioners are missing the point.

Clients are not being transitioned, anyone who asks simple basic questions like “how many case files were actually transferred to other agencies?” would see that the Mental Health Recovery Services Board did a horrible job in overseeing the transition process.

Opinions swirl around longer school year

The governor has called for extending the school year by 20 days to 200, adding them at a rate of four days every other year during the next decade.

But many of the more than 250 people who wrote to the governor and lawmakers after details of his plan were released said it's a bad idea.

Several complained that the longer school year wouldn't justify the higher costs for teachers' salaries, busing and even air conditioning -- if there is air conditioning.

"I mean, you try sitting in an EXTREMELY hot school all day for an extra 20 days," fourth-grader Ashley Murphy of Lebanon wrote in an e-mail to Strickland.

Darlene Fisher statement from Chamber’s Legislative Breakfast

This morning was the Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Breakfast, Toledo Public School Board member Darlene Fisher shared her comments made this morning for the readers of the blog:

As I begin my 4th year of a 4 year term, I am glad to see the topic of education has moved front and center from the federal level to the recent state proposal by Governor Strickland. There is no doubt we have significant challenges ahead of us and successful public schools are tied to expanded business development opportunities and a successful at large community.

At Toledo Public Schools, we understand the significant role we are charged with in improving the outcomes for our students.

Steel optimistic after DC lobbying trip…is Sobecki?

Two Toledo Public School Board members went to DC, both went to lobby, but you wouldn’t know that if you read either article in the Blade, either the one from before the trip or after the trip.

Lisa Sobecki, is the appointed Board of Education member from TPS to the Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) that group was to lobby the Senate. Had Sobecki been the one who was Board President, do you think that her lobbying efforts also on the behalf of the Toledo Public School system would be ignored? Did the Blade even attempt to contact her or any of the other Board members for their thoughts? Wouldn’t logic dictate that you at least talk to the other person from this area to provide balanced reporting? What if they had a different impression? What if they had conversations with different people that presented valuable information?

In addition to the above questions, this is exactly one of the reasons I raised concerns in the previous post,

Connecting Point workers more than frustrated…

If you’ve followed the discussion thread here that started back on January 15th, frustration is probably a mild word for what the employees and spouses of employees of Connecting Point workers are feeling. Today’s Blade touches on part of the story, Workers frustrated over future of agency but quite a bit of what has been expressed here related to financial management concerns and issues related to health insurance coverage was not touched on.

This was reported in the Blade:

Connecting Point has four locations in Toledo and an annual budget of $8.3 million, to which the county funnels $6.3 million of state local funding.
