Thomas Suddes: Easy money from slots could prove enticing to legislators

Example: The slot machine fight. Contrary to folklore, that's no more about morals than is personal marijuana use (de facto legal in Ohio) and, among consenting adults, anything-goes sexual conduct (legal in Ohio since the mid-1970s).

The slots fight is really over (1) who gets richer, thanks to General Assembly decisions and (2) whether schools, if slots became legal, ever again could pass property-tax levies. Schools can't want levies to become harder to pass. And levies aren't going away. But legalizing slots might make levies a tougher sell - as the Ohio Lottery might have done.

As everyone "knows," the Ohio Lottery was "supposed to take care of" schools.

Media releases on Ohio House passing Budget…

I received a release from Representative Barbara Sears who does represent part of Northwestern Ohio and one from the Governor’s office and one from the Ohio Democratic Party. I’m including Sears first, then one of the others as a contrast:

Representative Sears Announces Passage of State Budget

COLUMBUS— State Representative Barbara R. Sears (R- Sylvania) yesterday announced the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 1, the two-year, $54 billion state operating budget. The bill includes funding for the operation of state government agencies and services.

The House-passed version of House Bill 1 increases government spending by more than $1 billion over the next two years.

Goodbye and good luck

I'm outta here.

I don't mind people who disagree with me.  In fact, I came here because I enjoy the give and take of a good debate.  Lord knows, I suffered the slings of arrows of several frontpagers, commenters, and other bloggers because of my support of Hillary Clinton.  And yet, despite some deeply personal and regretable attacks from both sides, I stayed.

I've been at this site for three years now.  I've gone through three rounds of site administrators during that time.  I think it's safe to say I'm the longest running member of BSB still blogging. Until today.  Because during my entire time at BSB, I've had one simple request for the administrators here: we don't have to agree with each other, but we should always have each other's back.

More political games…Ohio Democratic Party vs Mary Taylor

It should have been expected that when earlier this month Republican Mary Taylor made it known that it had been 245 days since the fiscal year ended and her office did not have the numbers they needed to do the required annual audit that it was going to be political. She’s a Republican, Governor Strickland is a Democrat so when she said comments like:

“How will the governor know where to go fiscally if he doesn’t know where he’s been?”

It was pretty much game on. As soon as there was something negative to report about Taylor’s office, it would be pointed out.

Fisher campaign responds to BSB/ODB "No ODP endorsement pledge"

According to Lauren Goode, Fisher for Ohio spokewoman, the campaign has "no comment at this time."

I think Fisher missed the boat to be a real leader here.  There's nothing but upside for him to say that ODP shouldn't endorse.  One, ODP Chairman Chris Redfern has publicly and privately told the candidates that he'd prefer to keep ODP neutral in the race.  Two, the common perception is that Fisher has the most at risk by leaving this up to the primary voters.  By taking the pledge, it shows Fisher isn't willing to take some political risk and willing to be judged as a candidate on his own merits.

Dispatch Sort Of Mentions Senate Endorsement Pledge

Well, kind of mentioned it. Specifically, they talked about Chris Celeste's position on an ODP endorsement.

Celeste said that he could be "a creative force to solve problems" in the Senate and said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern should ensure that the party remains neutral in a primary.

"We don't need Chris Redfern laying hands on an anointed candidate," he said.

Of course, no mention was made to anything that took place here at BSB.

Those damn conjecturing bloggers...

Last week, Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern held a telephone con"fern"ce with Ohio bloggers to discuss the U.S. Senate primary.  Part of the news is that starting in the summer (why not immediately, we don't know) Redfern promises to hold monthly conference calls with us so we can get information straight to the horse's mouth.  Apparently, the "Fern" is sick of these damn speculating blogs that conjecture things like... Chris Redfern being in the tank for Lee Fisher and planning on putting his thumb on the scale as much as possible for Fisher over Brunner.

So, let us play a little fun game.

An open letter to all '10 U.S. Senate Democratic candidates

The Preamble of the Ohio Democratic Party's Constitution and Bylaws of 2007 states, that our party is organized to "sustain and advance the principles of democracy" and that one of the essential tenets of our party is that "We believe that there is no substitute for fair and equal representation and strong public participation in a government chose by election."

And yet, despite that being one of the fundamental principles of the Ohio Democratic Party, Chapter 9 of that same documents says:

"In any election year in which any statewide office . . . are to appear on the ballot, the Executive Committee shall be called for a meeting before the primary election and must carefully consider in each race the endorsement of one of more persons.

Missed the Blogger Call; YDA This Weekend

Well everyone, I missed this afternoon's blogger conference call with Ohio Democratic Party chairman Chris Redfern. Darn that real job that keeps interfering with my blogging :) However, if you're looking for a recap, I'd recommend this post from Jill over at WLST.

This weekend, I'll be heading to the Big Apple to attend this year's Young Democrats of America Winter National Committee meeting. Click here for the conference website. I will have my camera and Flip video camcorder with me, so if anything interesting happens, or any national political types show up I'll be fully prepared. Check back here for updates!
