Space, Sutton fill Ohio's gap on U.S. House Energy, Commerce Committee

U.S. Reps. Zack Space (D-Dover) and Betty Sutton (D-Copley) have won seats on the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee and are the first Ohioans to sit on the committee in two years.

The last Ohio U.S. representatives to serve on the committee were Ted Strickland and Sherrod Brown who left in 2007.

Space said he'll be able to help his district and the state in the new position.

Strickland: Auto bailout or depression

Gov. Ted Strickland said if the U.S. auto industry fails the country will slip into a depression.

Appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Thursday, Strickland debated giving loans to General Motors and Chrysler with Gov. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.). Strickland said the failure of the Detroit Three would collapse auto suppliers as well.

"I believe we are in a national recession that could...go into depression if this industry fails,” he said. "I believe those who are opposing this bailout are playing with fire."

Strickland backs Obama's big spending plan

Gov. Ted Strickland said he supports a plan by President-elect Barack Obama to give states billions of dollars to build infrastructure.

Obama announced Saturday his administration will spend more money on roads, bridges and public buildings since the federal government and states built the national interstate highway system more than 50 years ago.

Brown targets bailout hypocrisy between banks, automakers

During a break from the Senate Banking Committee’s hearing on aid to domestic automakers, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain) alleged hypocrisy behind approving loans to financial institutions with no strings attached but not for auto manufacturers.

Voinovich: 'time is running out' for autos

U.S. Sen. George Voinovich says "time is running out" for Congress to act on giving loans to U.S. automakers.

The heads of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are on Capitol Hill asking Congress for as much as $34 billion in federal aid for their companies that are in danger of running out of money.

Last month Congress heard their pleas and began to hear bills to aid the auto industry. A bill from Voinovich (R-Cleveland) would essentially accelerate $25 billion in loans for automakers already approved by the government.

Brown, Beatty and Budish react to economic news

Ohio Democratic leaders reacted to news of budget shortfalls and economic turmoil by calling for bipartisanship and innovative solutions as Ohioans deal with the anticipated instability.

Gov. Ted Strickland said Monday that the 2009 Ohio budget faces a $640 million shortfall due to the national recession. He also said the next

biennial budget covering 2010 and 2011 will have a deficit between $4 and $7 billion. 

Ohio House Democratic Leader Joyce Beatty (D-Columbus) said that the math does not appear to add up well for Ohio.

DeWine reacts to Strickland's budget announcement

The Ohio Republican Party reacted to Gov. Ted Strickland's announcement of looming budget defecits with a mix of credit and blame.

"It's good to see the governor finally got off the campaign trail and started paying attention to Ohio's economic challenges," Deputy Chairman Kevin DeWine said in a statement.  "Unfortunately, he spent much of his first term blaming everyone else for the spilled milk rather than finding a way to clean it up."

Strickland to attend Obama meeting with National Governors Association, writes letter to President-elect on economy

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland will attend a National Governors Association meeting in Philadelphia with President-Elect Barack Obama and Vice President-Elect Joe Biden on Tuesday. 

Strickland's office said that the governors will discuss the unique challenges facing the states during the current economic turmoil and ways that the federal government can provide direct assistance. Strickland's office said he will join the other governors for a press briefing following the closed meeting.

Voinovich writes to Reid, Pelosi on auto loans

U.S. Sen. George Voinovich wrote Democratic U.S. Senate and House leaders asking them to support government loans to U.S. automobile manufacturers, calling the assistance "critical" to protecting hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi requested more from the automakers on how Ford, General Motors and Chrysler would use the money to make their companies viable. The Bush administration echoed the same point.
