Iraq vet announces run for treasurer

Mandel, 31, from Lyndhurst, made his announcement via a polished six-minute video on his campaign Website, www.joshmandel.com, followed by a Statehouse press conference.

"I am answering the call from Ohioans for new energy and fresh ideas in state government," Mandel said. "They want honest, principled leaders to watch over their tax dollars."

Mandel is in his second term representing the 17th House District in the Cleveland area. He previously was a member of Lyndhurst City Council. He earned a bachelor's degree from Ohio State University and a law degree from Case Western Reserve University.

Mandel's video, titled An American Story, heavily emphasizes his Iraq experience as well as his family history of military service.

State's cash for victims drying up

Salcedo, 29, of Westerville, had to quit her job as a bilingual employment recruiter to take care of her son.

Without more than $40,000 from a state fund for crime victims, Salcedo said, she'd never have been able to give her son the attention and therapy he needed to recover.

While the boy, Julien Rader, is doing better, the fund that helped pay for his recovery is clinging to life.

Attorney General Richard Cordray, whose office administers the Crime Victims Compensation Fund, warned lawmakers in April that the fund will be empty in two years without changes. Cordray repeated those warnings in a Dispatch interview Friday.

"I've assured (crime victims) that whatever it takes, we will protect this fund," Cordray said.

Jonathan Riskind: Presidents are baptized in complexity

Presidents wake up every day wondering whether terrorists will attack Americans and whether they will be judged to have failed to protect the homeland if that happens.

Presidents make decisions.

Members of Congress make speeches.

Is that unfair? Perhaps a little. Presidents can hem and haw and speechify with the best of them, and lawmakers sometimes take courageous, politically unpopular stands and cast votes that could cost them their jobs come the next election.

But being president has to be, no contest, the loneliest job in the world -- just look at the way they age (see the before and after photos of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush as recent examples) during their time in the White House.

Ohio House, Senate pass dueling film tax credits

COLUMBUS -- State lawmakers passed dueling tax credits to draw the film industry to Ohio as each chamber of the Ohio legislature pushed forward with a different plan Tuesday.

The separate plans passed by the Ohio House and Senate set up a showdown over the details that is more "High Noon" than "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." Majority Senate Republicans pushed through an ambitious plan on a 20-11 party line vote that offers up to $100 million a year in tax credits, while majority House Democrats served up a more modest offering of $20 million over the next two years. The House vote was 83-14.

Bobby Jindal: You Gotta be Kidding, Right?

As my latest Twitter message says, if Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who gave the GOP response to Preisdent Obama's not quite State of the Union last night, is the great shining hope of the GOP, then I like our chances.

As an example of "wasteful" spending in the stimulus bill, Jindal singled out $140 million for Volcano monitoring. I don't know about you, but I find it odd that the so-called pro-life party is knocking volcano monitoring. After all, it is estimated that volcano monitoring by the U.S. Geological Survey during the Mount Pinatubo disaster in the Phillipines of the early 1990's saved some 20,000 lives.

Obama glosses over complex realities

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama's assurance Tuesday that his mortgage-relief plan will only benefit deserving homeowners appears to be a stretch.

Even officials in his administration, many supporters of the plan in Congress and the Federal Reserve chairman expect some of that money will go to people who should have known better than to buy that huge house.

The president glossed over a number of complex realities in delivering his speech to Congress and a nation hungry for economic salvation.

A look at some of his assertions:

OBAMA: "We have launched a housing plan that will help responsible families facing the threat of foreclosure lower their monthly payments and refinance their mortgages.

Transcript of Obama's speech to Congress

Madame Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, and the First Lady of the United States:

I've come here tonight not only to address the distinguished men and women in this great chamber, but to speak frankly and directly to the men and women who sent us here.

I know that for many Americans watching right now, the state of our economy is a concern that rises above all others. And rightly so. If you haven't been personally affected by this recession, you probably know someone who has - a friend; a neighbor; a member of your family.
