Ohio: Jennifer Garrison

Sounds like the Garrison as Lt. Governor was a trial balloon that popped...

Remember a couple of weeks ago when both BSB and Ohio Daily Blog reported that Marietta-area State Rep. Jennifer Garrison was rumored to be Strickland's pick for running mate (after the last rumored candidate, Congressman Tim Ryan, was taken out of consideration by the Governor himself.)

Sounds to me like it was a trial balloon that popped.  Cincinnati's CityBeat magazine is reporting that Governor Strickland told an audience at a GLBT-targeted fundraiser in Cincinnati that Strickland has no intention on asking Garrison to run as his Lt. Governor:

Strickland appeared at an LGBT-themed fundraiser Saturday afternoon at an East Walnut Hills residence. During a question-and-answer session with attendees, the governor flatly dismissed reports that he was considering Garrison for lieutenant governor in his next race and assured them that wouldn’t happen, said several sources at the event.

House's bulkier budget sent to Senate

The House voted 53-45, along party lines, to provide a new school-funding system with the promise of billions of dollars in new money over the next 10 years while also keeping intact the majority of social safety-net programs.

"The times are too demanding to avoid making tough decisions," said Rep. Vernon Sykes, D-Akron, chairman of the House Finance Committee. "Even under the restraint of a very difficult budget, Ohio will preserve vital services for those that are most vulnerable."

The bill now moves to the Ohio Senate, where majority Republicans will get their shot at a plan that they say is a house of cards propped up by $7 billion in one-time state and federal dollars.

Fisher still telegraphing that Brunner is a threat...

Allow me to voice my dissent to Nick's post about Fisher's "Women for Lee" campaign fundraising group kick-off.  First, the simple fact that Fisher is launching a statewide fundraising subcommittee further cements that Fisher views that Brunner is the only Senate contender that Fisher is worried about.  Second, it suggests that Fisher is convinced that Brunner is in this for the long haul.

This continues the trend of Fisher reacting to Brunner.  I'm not surprised that Fisher is launching this effort in NEO as that's his geographical basis.  What I am surprised is who is not mentioned on this list of sponsors.  Ohio has four Democratic Congresswomen: Kaptur, Fudge, Sutton, and Kilroy.

Foreclosure moratorium on House list

If it passes, Ohio would have the most progressive foreclosure-prevention law in the nation, Rep. Mike Foley said. The state has the seventh-highest foreclosure rate in the nation, with an estimated 90,000 last year.

"So we're putting up as many roadblocks as possible to give us time to recalibrate and hopefully let the recovery straighten itself out," the Cleveland Democrat said of the bill, which will face strong opposition from the banking industry.

More than a month after taking control of the House, Democrats and Speaker Armond Budish of Beachwood rolled out a wide range of priority bills yesterday, including a ban on marketing credit cards at college campuses, and giving high schools the equipment needed to offer Advanced Placement courses through teleconferencing.

Kindergarten not easy fit

In Grandview Heights, the art room would have to give up its space to a kindergarten classroom and the subject become a traveling course, sort of an "art on a cart" situation, Superintendent Ed O'Reilly said.

In Wednesday's State of the State address, Gov. Ted Strickland proposed several sweeping education reforms, including funding all-day kindergarten for all children.

It was not clear yesterday when Strickland wants the program to start.

But in a briefing with education advocates yesterday, the governor's staff said the administration understands that classroom space will be an issue, and it might allow schools to use nontraditional buildings such as child-care centers or community facilities. Districts also might be able to seek waivers to postpone offering all-day kindergarten until facilities are available.

Names being bandied about to join Budish and Szollosi in leadership

On Election Day, Ohio Democrats picked up a majority in the Ohio House of Representatives, thanks in no small part to the fundraising prowess and campaign efforts of state Rep. Armond Budish (D-Beachwood).

The next morning, Ohio Democratic Party Chair Chris Redfern (D-Catawba Island) was already referring to Budish as speaker, but this title won't be official until state House Democrats convene on Tuesday to pick their new leadership team.
