Gifts kept coming in, even after '08 raids

One gift-giver to Auditor Frank Russo said a $100 check was solicited to help pay legal bills, The Plain Dealer reported yesterday. The number of gifts he received doubled from 2007.

The state-mandated financial disclosures from Russo and Commissioner Jimmy Dimora were released this month. They list unspecified gifts of at least $75 from fellow politicians, county employees and people who do business with the county.

Dimora told the commission he was limited in answering its questions because the FBI and IRS seized his personal notes and records in July.

No charges have been filed against Russo or Dimora.

Dimora listed unspecified gifts from 35 people and meals from 36 people, many of whom did not appear on past filings.

Cuyahoga County Democratic Party fund-raiser is filling up

The Cuyahoga County Democratic Party is expecting a full house during its annual fund-raiser March 29 at Executive Catering at Landerhaven.

Some local Democrats worried that the county corruption scandal and the recent Ohio Democratic Party dinner in Cleveland would cut into ticket sales.

But insiders say the county party is close to hitting the 750 person target for the event. The event sells out every year largely thanks to law firms, unions, and corporations that want to stay close to the party that dominates politics in the county. Tickets for this year's event cost $175 apiece. Sponsorship cost up to $1,750.

Peter Lawson Jones: Things That Make You Say "Huh?"

Yesterday we heard that two statewide heavyweights, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher are going to duke it out, ready to go mano e mano for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by George Voinovich (also known as John Glenn's old seat).

Now today, as reported over at Ohio Daily Blog, Cuyahoga County Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones says he's forming an exploratory committee to run for the Senate as well.

I'm filing this under things that make you say "Huh?"

What in the world makes PLJ think he can be a viable candidate? Not only is he a Cuyahoga County public official, he sits on the frigging board of commissioners with Jimmy Dimora! The only way he can be a viable candidate is if he publicly calls for Dimora's resignation, or leads a recall effort against Dimora.

Bill Mason? Seriously?

As Modern has reported below, rumor has it that ODP Chairman Chris Redfern has already backed Cuyahoga County prosecutor Bill Mason for Secretary of State. As a Cuyahoga County resident myself, I just can't believe it. Doesn't 'Fernsy get the Plain Dealer down there? Until this FBI corruption probe into Jimmy Dimora is complete, I can't believe that anyone in Columbus would want to consider a Cuyahoga County official for any statewide office, especially one as important as Secretary of State.

If you want a prosecutor to run, how about Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh? She has a spotless record in 8-plus years, as far as my research indicates.

A little outrage would be nice

Cuyahoga County Democrats continue to lack outrage.

That's too bad. A little might ignite some needed reform.

The party's numbness is evident again this month as 74-year-old Sheriff Gerald McFaul proves that even the law isn't above cronyism, patronage and politics on the public dime.

Acknowledging that he has handed relatives county jobs, asked deputies to sell tickets to his campaign fund-raisers and passed out plum gigs to allies to appraise foreclosed homes, McFaul continues to make no apologies.

The pipe-fitter-turned-lawman insists it doesn't matter whom he hires, as long as his pals are qualified. (Plain Dealer reporter Mark Puente pointed out that, in fact, not all are qualified for their assignments.

Cuyahoga treasurer wants to run for county commissioner

Cuyahoga County Treasurer Jim Rokakis will run for county commissioner if current Commissioner Jimmy Dimora decides against running for re-election in 2010.

Commissioner Dimora and County Auditor Frank Russo are under federal investigation for allegedly offering jobs in exchange for favors, receiving personal work in exchange for public contracts, and trying to influence the outcome of judicial proceedings. Rokakis said he expects Dimora’s seat could become vacant prior to 2010 due to the federal investigation and that he'll definitely run for it if it opens.

Cuyahoga GOP optimistic about commissioner's race

The leader of Cuyahoga County's Republicans think his party has the best chance in 16 years to win a countywide office this year in the race for county commissioner, which would help bring the party out of the cold in Ohio's most Democratic area.

Petro, fmr. Cuyahoga commissioner, sees GOP victory in Dem county

MINNEAPOLIS – The last Republican to be elected to countywide office in solidly Democratic Cuyahoga County said he thinks the GOP will break into the county this year with the county commissioner’s race between Debbie Sutherland (R-Bay Village) and incumbent Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones.

Former attorney general Jim Petro was the last Republican to be elected to countywide office in Cuyahoga back in 1992. Petro told PolitickerOH.com that GOP's drought in Cuyahoga will end this year.

Cuyahoga County Republicans call on Lawson Jones to ask Dimora to step down

The Republican Party of Cuyahoga County is calling on Cuyahoga County Commissioners board president Peter Lawson Jones to ask fellow commissioner Jimmy Dimora to step down.

Dimora, along with Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo, both Democrats, were targeted last month as part of a federal corruption probe. No files have been charged. The probe came to light following raids of offices and homes of several Cuyahoga County officials in July by about 200 federal officers.
