Transportation gets $935.7 million boost

That's because by yesterday's deadline, more than 3,000 potential projects totaling as much as $9 billion were submitted for consideration to a state Web site by Ohio counties, cities, towns and other groups.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is gathering additional information about the projects to determine which are eligible for the stimulus funding. It will submit a final list of projects to Washington by March 17.

Obama touts stimulus package to governors including Ohio's Strickland

Governors including Ohio's Ted Strickland met with President Barack Obama at the White House today to discuss administration of the $787 billion economic stimulus package signed into law last week.

"Most governors left there feeling as if this president is wanting to be their partner and work with them in good faith to try to get this economy back on track," Strickland said after the meeting where Obama announced that more than $15 billion in Medicaid assistance money will be distributed to states on Wednesday.

Obama also announced he's tapped Vice President Joe Biden to oversee administration efforts to keep the stimulus program "on track," and that he's appointed former Interior Department Inspector General Earl V.

Jackson, fellow Ohio mayors to meet today with Obama

COLUMBUS -- The mayors of most major Ohio cities have gone to Washington for meetings with President Barack Obama and key members of his Cabinet.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors says the leaders of Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Youngstown are among more than 70 mayors expected at the White House on Friday.

Besides seeing the president and Vice President Joe Biden, the mayors also were to gather with Attorney General Eric Holder, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and other members of the administration.

Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner chose not to join Ohio's other big-city mayors on the trip. Finkbeiner says Toledo's budget challenges have forced the city to drop its memberships in the U.S. Conference of Mayors and other organizations.
