College Dems say GOP election reforms would disenfranchise student absentee voters

Ohio College Democrats are taking issue with election reform legislation introduced recently by state Sen. Bill Seitz (R-Cincinnati) and Republican leadership in the Ohio Senate. 

Senate Bill 380 represents Republican attempts to pass election reform legislation during the lame duck session of Ohio's 127th General Assembly. Discussions began on the bill last week and the legislation addresses some issues of contention between Republicans and Democratic Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner during the campaign season.

Carey takes on ‘Golden Week,’ election security in column

State Sen. John Carey (R-Wellston) is taking on election security and his argument to eliminate the election "Golden Week" in his weekly column. 

Carey used his column to talk up Senate Bill 380 - Republican-sponsored legislation that seeks to end the 5-day overlap that allowed Ohioans to both register and vote on the same day during the 2008 Election. The bill would also allow for bipartisan observers at early voting locations.

McCain call announces statewide leadership team, focuses on energy ahead of Obama visit

The campaign of presumptive presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) held a conference call Thursday afternoon to announce their statewide Ohio leadership team and talk about energy ahead of a visit to Dayton by presumptive presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.)

Former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine (R-Springfield) was introduced as the state chair for the McCain campaign in Ohio. DeWine announced five Ohio regional chairs for the campaign.

Chamber compromise on Cuyahoga reform leads to commission

A compromise has been reached between Ohio's legislative chambers that will send the issue of Cuyahoga County government reform to a commission that will develop recommendations to be put on the ballot for Cuyahoga voters to decide.

Conference committee appointees named

Senate President Bill Harris (R - Ashland) and House Speaker Jon Husted (R - Kettering) named the three Senate and House appointees to the conference committee on the Capitol Bill today.

The Senate appointees include Finance Chair John Carey (R - Wellston), senior Democrat on the finance committee Capri Cafaro (D - Hubbard) and state Sen. Tom Niehaus (R - New Richmond).

The House appointees include Finance Chair Jay Hottinger (R - Newark), senior Democrat on the finance committee Michael Skindell (D - Lakewood) and state Rep. Shannon Jones (R - Springboro).

Cuyahoga County reform is going to conference committee

After today it's recess, but Ohio lawmakers won't have the summer off quite yet. Both chambers will have to return for session at least one more time on June 10 to approve a conference committee report on the appropriations bill.
