John Kasich will be in Beavercreek today 8/5 at 3:30 p.m.: Anyone going?

John Kasich will be at Beef O'Bradys, 3347 SeaJay Drive in Beavercreek, Ohio (Montgomery County.)

Anyone available?

Would love for someone to ask him why if Ohio's income tax is what stands in the way of Ohio developing new high-paying jobs, then why is he telling folks he's probably not going to cut the income tax at all during his first term?  Or ask him what state government programs he'd like to eliminate, etc.

Ask him if he supports the GOP legislators who voted against cutting the state's income tax in the most recent budget, etc.?

I'm going to try to make it, but it's going to be tough because it's a rather long drive for me.

Ohio parties trade jabs before Kasich announcment

In advance of former Republican U.S. Rep. John R. Kasich's expected announcement tonight in Westerville that he is running for governor next year, the Ohio Democratic Party has launched a Web site called "John Kasich Times" with a new Web ad hammering Kasich for his six-year tenure at the failed Wall Street investment firm Lehman Brothers.

Kasich expected to name treasurer today for campaign against Strickland

Republican John Kasich is expected to file papers today so that he can begin raising money for the 2010 race for governor.

Sources told The Dispatch that the former congressman from Westerville will file papers this afternoon with the Ohio secretary of state designating a treasurer for his gubernatorial campaign. The move will permit Kasich to raise cash and hire staff for his anticipated campaign against Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland.

"We're off and running," said a source who has been helping Kasich prepare for a gubernatorial bid.

Kasich, a former 18-year congressman and a Fox News on-air personality, is expected to formally declare his candidacy by early June.

For two years, he has been ubiquitous at GOP county Lincoln Day dinners, drawing big crowds and exciting the party base with fiery speeches.

Race for Voinovich's seat: toss up

WASHINGTON -- The race among Democrats to be the next U.S. senator from Ohio is getting more fun by the minute. Lee Fisher and Jennifer Brunner already were planning a spirited primary contest, to say the least, and now a third Democrat -- arguably less viable -- is getting in.

You might have never heard of Tyrone Yates if you're in Cleveland. If you're in Cincinnati, though, you have. (The 2010 elections seem to have drawn a number of people with similar geographic-name challenges, including Rob Portman and, running for governor, John Kasich.)

Yates is a state legislator who used to be Cincinnati's vice mayor and was an assistant state attorney general.

Possible gubernatorial candidate says wait, see

"I've been traveling around the state of Ohio because, as many of you know, I've been thinking about running for governor of the state of Ohio," Kasich told about 150 here last week at a Lincoln Day dinner jointly sponsored by the Republican parties in Seneca and Sandusky counties.

The former congressman from Westerville has been the hottest speaker on the GOP rubber-chicken circuit for two years and has about a dozen county Lincoln Day speeches lined up in February and March.

But political observers from both parties are beginning to wonder just when -- and if -- Kasich actually will declare his candidacy, contending that he can't wait too long if he hopes to seriously challenge the popular incumbent, Democrat Ted Strickland, who already has a $2 million head start.

Ohioans like Gov. Strickland and his new education plan, poll shows

COLUMBUS -- Gov. Ted Strickland is again gaining in popularity with Ohio voters, according to polling conducted days after the Democrat delivered his annual State of the State speech and released a tough new budget proposal heavy on investing in public education.

The governor's approval has risen to 63 percent, up from 54 percent in December, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted Jan. 29 throughFeb. 2.

Strickland also continues to hold a strong position for re-election over possible Republican candidates - former Congressman John Kasich, former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine and current state Sen. Kevin Coughlin.

The poll also found that voters approve of Strickland's overall plan to revamp school funding, make all-day kindergarten mandatory, increase teacher certification standards and increase the school year by 20 days.

Ohioans support Strickland's education plan; overwhelmingly support Strickland over GOP

The Columbus Dispatch has the latest Quinnpiac poll shows generally good news for the Strickland Administration:

  • Strickland crushes, crushes John Kasich 56% to 26%.  Kasich actually does worse against Governor Strickland than former U.S. Senator Mike DeWine who loses 54% to 32% in a head-to-head matchup.  This is probably largely due to DeWine's highly name recognition.  Regardless, both "top tier" GOP prospects aren't polling any better (one could argue worse) than Ken Blackwell's 2006 election result.
  • Although a large segment of the respondents felt they didn't know enough about Governor Strickland's education reform plan, those who do feel they know enough support it.  42% believe it will improve education in Ohio; 22% do not.
