Taylor to seek another term as state auditor

The Ohio Republican Party's central committee unanimously endorsed Taylor yesterday after she informed the 66 members in a conference call Wednesday night that she would run for re-election.

In a statement, Taylor, 43, said she appreciated the endorsement and will wait until next week to officially announce her candidacy. She declined to comment further.

She had flirted with a bid for the Senate seat being vacated at the end of next year by the retiring Republican incumbent, Sen. George V. Voinovich. Taylor, elected in 2006, currently is the GOP's only statewide executive officeholder.

A Senate campaign would have put Taylor on a collision course with former U.

Jon said “Yes, I am, that’s what I do for a living on the side…”

Watch the video for yourself in it’s complete form…For those of you wondering about the e-mails? Here’s the text of one that went to Kevin DeWine that I was sent a copy of:

2 Democrats seek Voinovich's seat

If both candidates stay in the race, Gov. Ted Strickland will be forced to find a new running mate next year and Brunner's seat on the crucial State Apportionment Board will be left undefended by an incumbent.

Despite professing a "deep respect" for Brunner, Strickland heartily endorsed Fisher at a news conference last night and denied that his picking sides could open a rift in the party less than three years after it won control of four of five statewide executive offices.

"I don't believe my support for Lee is an indication of a split within the party," Strickland said, adding that he is "obviously concerned" that Brunner's decision to forgo re-election might increase the risk of losing the secretary of state's office.

Husted wants bipartisan oversight of elections

The Kettering Republican said yesterday that he has begun crafting and seeking political support for a November ballot initiative that would remove the secretary of state's oversight of elections and implement a new system for drawing legislative boundaries every 10 years.

Husted, beginning his first Senate term after serving four years as House speaker, confirmed that he is interested in running in 2010 for secretary of state, the office held by Democrat Jennifer Brunner.

"I'm more interested in solving the problems we have in the way we operate state government," Husted said. "It's not about me, and it's not about Jennifer Brunner. It's about creating a new system that's not about hyperpartisanship.

Paging Ohio GOP Chairman Kevin Dewine...

As we consider the trainwreck that has been the Kevin Coughlin for Governor campaign rollout, I wanted to remind everyone what Ohio GOP Chairman Kevin DeWine promised upon his recent election:

As part of his plan to lead his party back into power, DeWine announced his "Leading Ohio: A Blueprint for GOP Victory# 10 item on that list is:

10. Enforce a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct

Our party historically upheld the highest standard for ethics and morality in government, but most voters know us better for our hypocrisy. Not an election goes by without a major scandal involving a prominent Republican figure.

We cannot continue to campaign on a higher standard of government if we fail to uphold it, so we must adopt a zero tolerance policy for any candidate or elected official who crosses the line.

State Sen. Coughlin off, running

Coughlin, who has represented Summit County in the Senate since 2001, has filed the necessary papers with the secretary of state to begin raising and spending money for a gubernatorial campaign.

Coughlin, 38, announced his candidacy on his Web site, saying, "The days when a handful of people in Columbus pick our candidates for us have come to an end."

Former U.S. Rep. John R. Kasich of Westerville also is considering a run for governor, but he has yet to form a campaign committee.

Kasich has been wooing support from GOP activists for more than a year, and during the next two months, he is scheduled to keynote about a dozen county party Lincoln Day dinners.

Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele is Republicans' first African-American leader

WASHINGTON -- Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele on Friday became the first African-American chairman of the Republican National Committee, winning a five-way, battle with candidates including former Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell.

"It is time for something completely different, and we're going to bring it to them," said Steele, a former Maryland GOP Chairman. "We're going to bring this party to every corner, every boardroom, every neighborhood, every community."

Blackwell's campaign had been endorsed by conservative leaders like Family Research Council President Tony Perkins and Phyllis Schlafly of the Eagle Forum, but it never caught fire among the 168 RNC members voting on the chairmanship.

Ken Blackwell says he's confident before Republican National Committee vote

WASHINGTON -- Former Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell promoted his bid for RNC chairman this morning outside a meeting where party leaders were gathering to pick a new leader.

"This is a multi-ballot process," said Blackwell, who hopes to follow the model Jim Nicholson used when he was unexpectedly elected RNC chairman in 1997, after prolonged balloting.

The first candidate to win more than half of the 168 RNC members' votes will become chairman. Incumbent Mike Duncan is entering the race with the most public backing. Roughly a dozen RNC members have announced support for Blackwell, and he's also won public endorsements from conservative leaders like Phyllis Schlafly, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins and American Conservative Union Chairman David Keene.

First RNC Ballot Is In

And apparently Blackwell's people are starting to maneuver.

From The Fix on Twitter:

Shannon Flaherty (Blackwell's flack) drops off a reminder...that Jim Nicholson won in 1997 fter getting just 23 votes on 1st ballot.

Update: First vote tally from, of all people, Kevin DeWine:

Duncan 52, steele 46, dawson 28, saul 22, blackwell 20

Blackwell is reportedly claiming he'll stay in, but most think he underperformed and will drop out.
