Ohio goes global

Ohio is the only state in the country whose exports have increased every year since 1998, and it's seventh in the country for exports overall. According to new numbers from the U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration, Ohio's exports grew by nearly 7 percent in 2008 over the previous year, to $45.5 billion. The state's biggest manufactured exports are automotive and airplane parts, machinery, chemicals, electronics and computers.

About 11,400 Ohio companies sell their products internationally, and nearly 300,000 jobs in this state depend upon exports. Only California and Texas have more jobs linked to manufacturing exports.

Canada buys 46 percent of Ohio's exported goods, followed by Mexico, at 7 percent.

Quick question...

How many conservative activists who prided themselves of purging Senators like Mike DeWine in 2006 had their first pangs of regret watching Senator Brown flying into D.C. to make the deciding vote for the stimulus. Are they deluding themselves into thinking DeWine would have voted the same way?

I'm somewhat amused at reading all the Ohio conservative blogs gnashing teeth over the stimulus plan and yet none of them acknowledge their obvious role in making it all possible.

Thanks, fellas...

Mike DeWine for Governor campaign launches on the Columbus Dispatch editorial pages

At some point, you have to admire the Columbus Dispatch's complete abandonment of journalism ethics.  I mean, you let a guy announce his candidacy for Governor by giving him an editorial column, instead of a newsstory that addresses some of these points.

Today, the Columbus Dispatch published a column by former U.S. Senator/widely rumored GOP gubernatorial candidate Mike DeWine titled "Ohio needs new direction in tough times."  Nowhere does the Dispatch editorial writers notify its readership that this column is written by a person who has the personal ambition to run against Governor Strickland, and therefore, is a less than objective critic of the current Governor.

Ohio needs new direction in tough times

It is absurd to think that a one-time, short-term monetary shot in the arm will heal economic wounds that have been festering in this state for years. It is equally short-sighted to grow government at a time when we should be streamlining it. The more we expand Ohio government with this money, the more we'll have to pay year after year in growth that we simply cannot sustain and with resources we simply do not have.

Juggling the budget with borrowed money, like the banks on Wall Street did, isn't going to work. And, unless we chart a radically new course and fundamentally rethink how this state operates, we only postpone Ohio's day of reckoning.

Ohioans support Strickland's education plan; overwhelmingly support Strickland over GOP

The Columbus Dispatch has the latest Quinnpiac poll shows generally good news for the Strickland Administration:

  • Strickland crushes, crushes John Kasich 56% to 26%.  Kasich actually does worse against Governor Strickland than former U.S. Senator Mike DeWine who loses 54% to 32% in a head-to-head matchup.  This is probably largely due to DeWine's highly name recognition.  Regardless, both "top tier" GOP prospects aren't polling any better (one could argue worse) than Ken Blackwell's 2006 election result.
  • Although a large segment of the respondents felt they didn't know enough about Governor Strickland's education reform plan, those who do feel they know enough support it.  42% believe it will improve education in Ohio; 22% do not.

Poll: Strickland approval rating slipping; DeWine best known among '10 challengers

Gov. Ted Strickland's approval rating has fallen but he still has a majority of support from voters, according to a poll released by the Quinnipiac Polling Institute.

Strickland has a 54 percent approval rating, down from ratings in the high 50s and 60s earlier this year.

Former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine is viewed favorably by 43 percent of likely voters and unfavorably by 24 percent.

Republicans told PolitickerOH.com this summer that DeWine is considering a run for governor.

ODP: Republicans using 'Bull Connor' tactics in Greene co.

Ohio Republicans are deploying their own “Bull Connor” to scare people from voting, the Ohio Democratic Party accused today.

ODP chair Chris Redfern and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman (D) held a conference call with reporters to characterize the Greene Co. Sheriff Gene Fischer’s request for all registration cards and address-change forms for all who registered and voted last week in the county.
