Ohio parties trade jabs before Kasich announcment

In advance of former Republican U.S. Rep. John R. Kasich's expected announcement tonight in Westerville that he is running for governor next year, the Ohio Democratic Party has launched a Web site called "John Kasich Times" with a new Web ad hammering Kasich for his six-year tenure at the failed Wall Street investment firm Lehman Brothers.

Ohio auditor will seek 2nd term

Taylor made her announcement at the Statehouse a week after informing the Ohio Republican Party central committee that she would not run for the U.S. Senate against former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman of Cincinnati in next May's GOP primary election.

"I want to continue the progress we've made helping to provide Ohio taxpayers with a more accountable and affordable government," Taylor said at a news conference.

Taylor, 43, said she "seriously considered" a Senate bid and denied receiving any pressure from the state GOP to run for re-election. Her decision, she said, was based on "where do I fit in to be of the best service" to Ohioans.

The auditor is one of five members of the State Apportionment Board, which will reconfigure Ohio's 99 House and 33 Senate districts for the next decade after the 2010 census.

Media releases on Ohio House passing Budget…

I received a release from Representative Barbara Sears who does represent part of Northwestern Ohio and one from the Governor’s office and one from the Ohio Democratic Party. I’m including Sears first, then one of the others as a contrast:

Representative Sears Announces Passage of State Budget

COLUMBUS— State Representative Barbara R. Sears (R- Sylvania) yesterday announced the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 1, the two-year, $54 billion state operating budget. The bill includes funding for the operation of state government agencies and services.

The House-passed version of House Bill 1 increases government spending by more than $1 billion over the next two years.

Governor's CNN trip blends party and state business

Strickland went to Chicago on March 16 for what the Ohio Democratic Party calls "campaign and party-building meetings" to raise money for himself and the party. Doug Kelly, the party's executive director, declined to provide details.

The governor also held political meetings in New York last Tuesday and spoke at the Spain-U.S. Business Sustainability Conference at the Grand Hyatt New York.

Strickland was invited by the Spanish ambassador in part to discuss the state's partnership with two Spanish companies involved with solar and wind projects with the hope of new development in Ohio, spokeswoman Amanda Wurst said.

The governor also stopped by the Lou Dobbs Show on CNN and made a pitch for Ohio, saying, "I invite people watching this show to come to Ohio.

Cuyahoga County Democratic Party fund-raiser is filling up

The Cuyahoga County Democratic Party is expecting a full house during its annual fund-raiser March 29 at Executive Catering at Landerhaven.

Some local Democrats worried that the county corruption scandal and the recent Ohio Democratic Party dinner in Cleveland would cut into ticket sales.

But insiders say the county party is close to hitting the 750 person target for the event. The event sells out every year largely thanks to law firms, unions, and corporations that want to stay close to the party that dominates politics in the county. Tickets for this year's event cost $175 apiece. Sponsorship cost up to $1,750.

Goodbye and good luck

I'm outta here.

I don't mind people who disagree with me.  In fact, I came here because I enjoy the give and take of a good debate.  Lord knows, I suffered the slings of arrows of several frontpagers, commenters, and other bloggers because of my support of Hillary Clinton.  And yet, despite some deeply personal and regretable attacks from both sides, I stayed.

I've been at this site for three years now.  I've gone through three rounds of site administrators during that time.  I think it's safe to say I'm the longest running member of BSB still blogging. Until today.  Because during my entire time at BSB, I've had one simple request for the administrators here: we don't have to agree with each other, but we should always have each other's back.

More political games…Ohio Democratic Party vs Mary Taylor

It should have been expected that when earlier this month Republican Mary Taylor made it known that it had been 245 days since the fiscal year ended and her office did not have the numbers they needed to do the required annual audit that it was going to be political. She’s a Republican, Governor Strickland is a Democrat so when she said comments like:

“How will the governor know where to go fiscally if he doesn’t know where he’s been?”

It was pretty much game on. As soon as there was something negative to report about Taylor’s office, it would be pointed out.

Ohio Democrats talk up 2010 races at '08 victory celebration

The Ohio Democratic Party's Saturday dinner in Cleveland, organized to celebrate its 2008 victories, was actually dominated by talk of victories in 2010. (Finally, the party is looking ahead!)

Five Democrats - Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, Lt. Governor Lee Fisher, Cincinnati State Rep. Tyrone Yates, Dover Congressman Zack Space and Cuyahoga County Commissioner Lee Fisher - pitched themselves for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Republican George Voinovich, who is retiring at the end of next year.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown urged party members to avoid a costly primary. (He had a brief but nasty tangle with Cincinnati lawyer Paul Hackett in the 2006 primary.

New Democrat eyes LaTourette seat

Democratic lawyer Michael Wager is interested in the 14th Congressional seat currently occupied by Bainbridge Township Repubican Steve LaTourette.

Wager, an active party insider and partner at the law firm, Squire Sanders & Dempsey,
says, "I am giving consideration to a run." He is expected to make a more formal announcement in several weeks.

Democrats say Wager, 57, already has the backing of party leaders. He's expected to talk up his bid at Ohio Democratic Party dinner in Cleveland on Saturday night.

He is the former chairman of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority. (He wanted to stay on but Mayor Frank Jackson did not reappoint him.) Wager lives in Shaker Heights and is outside the 14th Congressional District, but he is said to be shopping around for a new home.

LaTourette, who hasn't always voted in Congress along party lines, has cruised to re-election in the past.
